Description
Music from all three films arranged for wind instruments. Desirable and collectible, these instrumental folios are loaded with black-and-white photos of scenes from all three films. They are printed on top-quality antique paper stock, and the covers showcase the new "trilogy" artwork. The wind instrument books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2-3 player and a fully orchestrated accompaniment recording. Each theme on the recording is presented as a "demo" track (which features that particular instrument) and as a "play-along" track without the solo instrument. New icons are used in the books to guide the players through the accompaniment options. A separate piano accompaniment book with audio is available for the wind series. The instrumental solo part, in concert pitch, is added above the piano part. The recording features live demonstration performances of various instrument tracks from the series. Titles are the twelve major themes from the blockbuster trilogy: from The Fellowship of the Ring: The Prophecy * In Dreams * Concerning Hobbits * Many Meetings * The Black Rider; from The Two Towers: Gollum's Song * Rohan * Evenstar * Forth Eorlingas; from The Return of the King: Into the West * The Steward of Gondor * Minas Tirith.

More about this title

About the Composer: Howard Shore

Howard Shore has composed the music for some of cinema's most ambitious fantasy and drama projects, earning Academy Awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit series. His orchestral writing combines classical structure with sweeping melodic arcs that have made these themes instantly recognizable to audiences worldwide. Shore's approach to film scoring emphasizes thematic clarity and emotional depth, qualities that translate remarkably well to educational arrangements.

Why we love this

These arrangements preserve Shore's gift for memorable, singable melodies while remaining genuinely playable at Level 2-3. The piano accompaniments are stylistically sensitive without being overly complex, allowing student pianists to support wind players without getting buried in technical demands. Twelve themes across three films give ensembles flexibility to program a single iconic moment or build a full thematic journey.

What to expect

Sweeping, cinematic, and deeply lyrical. These themes capture the wonder and melancholy of Middle-earth, moving from intimate moments (the Shire's gentle charm in "Concerning Hobbits") to grand, heroic gestures (the rousing energy of "Forth Eorlingas"). The piano writing preserves the orchestral richness of Shore's originals while remaining grounded in the acoustic warmth of the instrument.

Who it's for

Piano accompanists in middle and high school ensembles who are supporting wind soloists or small instrumental groups tackling these beloved film themes. Pianists at the Level 2-3 threshold will find the accompaniment parts accessible yet musically substantive enough to feel rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the solo melody prominently against the accompaniment; pianists should think of themselves as supporting a featured soloist rather than carrying harmonic weight equally.
  • Use the demo tracks to hear how Shore's original orchestrations shape phrasing and rubato, then apply similar musicality to your own interpretation.
  • Refer to the provided icons and cues in the book to coordinate transitions between demo and play-along tracks during rehearsal.
  • Pay attention to dynamic shape within each theme; Shore's melodies often build gradually toward emotional peaks that require subtle accompaniment support from the piano.

How to use it

Feature individual themes in pops concerts or film score programs, or program a sequence of contrasting themes (perhaps one from each film) to showcase Shore's compositional range. These arrangements also work beautifully as background music for school multimedia projects or as incentive repertoire for younger students beginning to explore ensemble playing.

Skills your students will build

  • Accompanying ensemble members with sensitive dynamic balance
  • Reading film score-inspired harmonic language at the Level 2-3 range
  • Coordinating with recorded accompaniment tracks and following cue markers
  • Sustaining lyrical phrasing across longer melodic arcs
  • Interpreting stage directions and thematic context from film narrative
