Description
Music from all three films arranged for wind instruments. Desirable and collectible, these instrumental folios are loaded with black-and-white photos of scenes from all three films. They are printed on top-quality antique paper stock, and the covers showcase the new "trilogy" artwork. The wind instrument books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2-3 player and a fully orchestrated accompaniment recording. Each theme on the recording is presented as a "demo" track (which features that particular instrument) and as a "play-along" track without the solo instrument. A separate piano accompaniment book with audio is available for the wind series. The instrumental solo part, in concert pitch, is added above the piano part. The recording features live demonstration performances of various instrument tracks from the series. Titles are the twelve major themes from the blockbuster trilogy: from The Fellowship of the Ring: The Prophecy * In Dreams * Concerning Hobbits * Many Meetings * The Black Rider; from The Two Towers: Gollum's Song * Rohan * Evenstar * Forth Eorlingas; from The Return of the King: Into the West * The Steward of Gondor * Minas Tirith. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

More about this title

About the Composer: Howard Shore

Howard Shore composed the complete scores for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, creating one of cinema's most celebrated and expansive film music catalogs. His work on the three films earned him three Academy Awards and established him as a master of epic orchestral storytelling. Shore's ability to craft memorable, singable themes that evolve across narrative arcs has made his Lord of the Rings music enduring repertoire for music educators and students.

Why we love this

These arrangements strike an ideal balance for developing clarinetists: the themes are instantly recognizable and musically rewarding to perform, yet the writing stays within Level 2-3 technical boundaries so students can focus on phrasing and musical expression rather than struggling with fingering patterns. The dual-track accompaniment system (demo and play-along) gives students immediate, high-quality feedback and lets teachers hear exactly how the part should sound before asking students to perform it.

What to expect

These solos capture the grandeur and intimacy of Tolkien's world. Some themes evoke heroic journeys and sweeping landscapes, while others settle into gentler, more introspective moments. Each arrangement preserves Shore's gift for creating melodies that linger in memory long after the music ends.

Who it's for

High school and advanced middle school clarinetists seeking substantial, movie-based solo repertoire that builds musicianship without requiring advanced technical facility. This collection also serves ensembles needing accessible thematic material for concerts, contests, or film music programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Sing through each phrase before playing it. Shore's themes are vocal in character, and clarinetists who approach them as singing lines rather than technical exercises will find the expressive contours more natural and the tone more open.
  • Adjust vibrato and dynamics based on the accompaniment track. The orchestral backing changes in color and intensity; use your ears to match the emotional weight of each section rather than playing at a static volume.
  • Spend time with both the demo and play-along tracks in the same practice session. Hearing your own instrument in the demo version clarifies the stylistic choices Shore wrote into the part; switching to the play-along immediately after locks in your musical memory.

How to use it

String these solos together as a thematic set during a film music concert, programming three to four contrasting pieces to showcase different emotional palettes within the trilogy. Alternatively, feature individual solos throughout the year as concert openers or closers, using the visual connection to the films to engage audiences beyond the typical band concert crowd.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing and breath control in longer melodic lines
  • Dynamic shaping within themes that sit in the clarinet's lyrical range
  • Musical independence when playing against orchestral accompaniment
  • Style awareness related to film scoring and thematic development
