Description
Music from all three films arranged for wind instruments. Desirable and collectible, these instrumental folios are loaded with black-and-white photos of scenes from all three films. They are printed on top-quality antique paper stock, and the covers showcase the new "trilogy" artwork. The wind instrument books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2-3 player and a fully orchestrated accompaniment recording. Each theme on the recording is presented as a "demo" track (which features that particular instrument) and as a "play-along" track without the solo instrument. A separate piano accompaniment book with audio is available for the wind series. The instrumental solo part, in concert pitch, is added above the piano part. The recording features live demonstration performances of various instrument tracks from the series. Titles are the twelve major themes from the blockbuster trilogy: from The Fellowship of the Ring: The Prophecy * In Dreams * Concerning Hobbits * Many Meetings * The Black Rider; from The Two Towers: Gollum's Song * Rohan * Evenstar * Forth Eorlingas; from The Return of the King: Into the West * The Steward of Gondor * Minas Tirith. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

More about this title

About the Composer: Howard Shore

Howard Shore is a composer whose film scores have shaped the sound of contemporary cinema. His work on Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy earned him three Academy Awards and stands as one of the most celebrated orchestral achievements in modern film. Shore's gift for creating memorable, singable melodies that convey both intimacy and epic scope makes his music exceptionally rewarding to arrange for student ensembles.

Why we love this

These arrangements capture the emotional architecture of Shore's themes while staying musically accessible to young brass players. The mix of lyrical, dance-like, and dramatic material gives trombonists real variety across a single collection, and the inclusion of accompaniment demos paired with play-along tracks lets students hear themselves in context immediately.

What to expect

These themes balance sweeping orchestral grandeur with intimate storytelling. You'll find yourself moving between graceful, song-like passages and moments of heroic momentum, all grounded in Shore's distinctive harmonic language that feels both majestic and deeply human.

Who it's for

Trombonists in grades 4-8 who have solid fundamental skills and are ready for material with more musical narrative. This collection works equally well for students building solo recital repertoire and for ensembles wanting to perform recognizable film music together.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to both the demo and play-along tracks before rehearsal so you understand how your line sits within the full orchestration.
  • Pay attention to the shifts between legato and marcato passages, especially in the action themes like 'Forth Eorlingas' and 'Minas Tirith'.
  • Shape the longer note values in ballads such as 'Evenstar' and 'Into the West' with gentle dynamic swells rather than keeping them flat.
  • Balance your volume when the accompaniment includes other brass voices, using the demo track to gauge where your part sits in the mix.

How to use it

Weave individual themes into concerts throughout the school year, or program a cluster of 3-4 selections from different films as a film music set. These arrangements shine in pops concerts and work well alongside classical repertoire as a bridge between familiar listening and serious musicianship.

Skills your students will build

  • Responding to changes between lyrical and marcato articulation
  • Reading and performing sustained lines with dynamic shape
  • Balancing solo passages against orchestrated accompaniment textures
  • Recognizing and executing contrasting musical characters across twelve distinct themes
  • Performing with accurate intonation in extended positions
