More about this title

About the Composer: Lois Brownsey

Lois Brownsey

Lois Brownsey and Marti Lunn Lantz have built a distinctive catalog of choral works rooted in storytelling and cultural diversity. Brownsey's musical foundation spans classical guitar training, musical theatre performance, and years playing bass in rock and blues ensembles across the United States and internationally. She and Lantz have collaborated on numerous seasonal and multi-cultural compositions for Alfred, alongside thematic song collections that explore global traditions and natural phenomena.

Brownsey's creative trajectory took her from live performance in clubs and concert venues (1973-1997) into composing, arranging, and studio work. She co-founded Red Rock Recording Studios in Pennsylvania with her husband Kent Heckman, a recording engineer, and the studio has become a production hub for many Alfred choral projects. Her earlier experience writing commercial jingles and co-composing with Sally K. Albrecht reflects her versatility across genres and formats.

Why we love this

Brownsey and Lantz craft seasonal choral writing that feels contemporary without sacrificing singability. The recorded accompaniment download frees you from the piano and lets your singers hear the piece in its finished context from the first rehearsal, accelerating learning and building confidence in less-experienced ensembles.

What to expect

The piece captures the visual and emotional texture of winter through accessible harmonies and contemporary compositional touches. It settles into a musical space that feels both reflective and energized, inviting singers and listeners into the particular stillness and beauty of the season.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs seeking a winter concert opener or closer that sounds polished but doesn't demand months of rehearsal. Community ensembles and adult choirs will also find the straightforward vocal writing and thematic clarity rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the recorded accompaniment from the start to establish the harmonic language and style; let your singers feel the groove before they worry about perfect blend.
  • Balance the seasonal imagery in your phrasing and tone quality; winter pieces from this team often shift emotional color between verses, so mark those transitions clearly in rehearsal.
  • Check the voice part ranges before assigning sections, particularly if you have younger singers; Brownsey and Lantz typically write within comfortable ranges, but confirm your group's capabilities.

How to use it

Schedule this during your winter concert to set the seasonal mood early, or pair it with other Brownsey/Lantz works from their catalog to create a thematic programming block. The recorded accompaniment makes it practical for assembly performances or holiday events where rehearsal time is compressed.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with contemporary harmonic language and modern compositional devices
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment and tracking instrumental cues
  • Interpreting seasonal and narrative themes through vocal expression and phrasing
  • Building confidence with multi-cultural and accessible repertoire
