More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has authored more than 800 published works and shaped music education through the Contemporary Band Course, now distributed by Alfred Music and adopted internationally, including throughout Norway where it has been translated into the local language. His compositional training under Morris Hutchings Ruger at California State University, Long Beach, combined with orchestration study under Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, gave him deep technical grounding that infuses his educational materials.

Playohar's impact extends far beyond publication: he spent nearly two decades teaching in public schools, led clinics and workshops at colleges and universities across North America and Europe, and received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence in recognition of his contributions to band music and music education. His work has been performed internationally and broadcast on network television, and he maintains membership in the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

Technic Today, Part 2 does exactly what intermediate flute players need: systematic, focused work on the technical demands their repertoire requires. Because it pairs directly with Band Today, Part Two, students see an immediate connection between exercises and the music they're actually performing in rehearsal, which accelerates both confidence and competence. The 24-page format respects the demands on your schedule while delivering real progress.

What to expect

Focused and achievable. The exercises build naturally from simpler to more complex figures, letting students experience steady growth in control and accuracy rather than frustration. Each page offers concrete musical tools without overwhelming the player with abstract technique.

Who it's for

Intermediate C flute players who have completed Band Today, Part One and are ready to deepen their technical foundation. This book serves flutists preparing for second-year band repertoire and addresses the scale passages, articulation patterns, and rhythmic precision that intermediate literature demands. It works equally well as a supplement to any intermediate band method.

How to get the most out of it

  • Assign specific pages or exercises that address technical challenges appearing in your current concert repertoire; this creates purposeful practice rather than rote drill work.
  • Incorporate 5-10 minutes of Technic Today material into sectional rehearsals rather than solo practice time, so flutists develop facility in an ensemble context and hear how secure technique serves blend and intonation.
  • Rotate through different exercises across the week instead of completing the book linearly; students retain and apply patterns more effectively when they encounter varied technical contexts.

How to use it

Use this as the technical backbone of your flute section's preparation during intermediate band. Assign exercises that directly support passages in your current concert pieces, turning technique work into a practical investment in performance quality. The modest page count makes it sustainable as an ongoing resource across the year without competing with rehearsal time or solo study.

Skills your students will build

  • Scale articulation and fluency
  • Tonguing precision and coordination with finger work
  • Interval accuracy and intonation control
  • Rhythmic flexibility within patterns
  • Breath control and phrase management
  • Technical independence between hands and tongue
