About the Composer: Michael Oare

Michael Oare

Michael Oare studied Music Composition and Music Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and has built a distinguished career as both an educator and composer. For 33 years, he directed the bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, where his ensembles earned superior ratings consistently, including 30 consecutive years performing grade 3 and 4 literature at the Virginia Concert Band Performance Assessment. Two of his compositions, "To Dream in Brushstrokes" and "Equilibrium," were selected for GIA Publications' Teaching Music Through Performance series.

Beyond the classroom, Oare serves as conductor of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band and maintains active involvement in state and national music education organizations. He holds memberships in ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu, performs with the Virginia Wind Symphony, and has received recognition including the 2016 Chesapeake Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year award and two Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association. His published works for young bands are widely performed in schools across the country.
