About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later recognized with the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both publishing administration (serving on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America) and composition, with over 800 published choral works performed widely across English-speaking countries.

Althouse has contributed significantly to choral pedagogy through co-authored resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, alongside several classroom reproducibles. He is a writer member of ASCAP and a regular recipient of the ASCAP Special Award. Beyond his individual compositions, he has collaborated extensively with his wife Sally K. Albrecht on children's musicals and vocal collections, and together they created I Hear America Singing, performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Why we love this

Althouse's gift for accessible, performance-ready arrangements shines here. The fresh lyrics breathe new life into an American standard while the unison and 2-part options let you scale this to any choir size and ability level, making it equally at home in a middle school setting or as a novelty feature in a mixed choir concert.

What to expect

Nostalgic warmth meets contemporary playfulness. The unison sections anchor singers in solid vocal unity, while the 2-part writing adds textural interest without technical demands. The overall effect is upbeat, inclusive, and genuinely entertaining.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for middle and high school choirs seeking a crowd-pleasing novelty number, community choruses programming a patriotic or Americana-themed concert, and younger ensembles building confidence through a recognizable, fun standard.

How to get the most out of it

  • Incorporate the staging and movement suggestions in the score to maximize the entertainment value and keep singers engaged with the comedic spirit of the piece.
  • Pair the printed score with the recorded accompaniment from the Alfred SoundTrax CD to ensure clean, confident vocal entrances and consistent tempo.
  • Work the updated lyrics clearly during rehearsal so singers own the fresh take on this classic rather than defaulting to the familiar version from memory.

How to use it

Book this as a finale or pre-intermission crowd-pleaser at a spring concert, or feature it as part of an Americana or popular standards set. The movement and staging elements make it ideal for a multimedia program or concert where visual engagement matters as much as the singing.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in unison with blend and confidence
  • Managing 2-part harmony in an accessible range
  • Integrating movement and staging with vocal performance
