About the Arranger: Patsy Ford Simms

Patsy Ford Simms

Patsy Ford Simms began her publishing career in 1981 and has since created over 300 compositions and arrangements for educational and church choirs across multiple major publishing houses, including Shawnee Press. Her work grew out of a direct teaching need: during her early years in the classroom, she found few quality choral octavos written for the junior high and middle school voice, so she began writing them herself.

Her formal training includes a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Knoxville College, a Master of Education from the University of Louisville, and a doctorate in Music Education from Columbia Pacific University. Across three decades of full-time teaching in grades K-12 and at the Youth Performing Arts School, Simms established herself as an arranger, composer, and clinician with an international presence. She has presented her work in Italy and Africa, received multiple ASCAP Special Music Awards, and had two of her compositions selected for MENC World's Largest Concerts. Her output includes several commissioned works and short musicals focused on African American history.

Why we love this

Simms knows exactly what middle school choirs need: music that engages students physically and emotionally while respecting their developing vocal abilities. This arrangement takes a beloved spiritual and reimagines it for active participation, built right into the score with clapping and stomping cues that transform rehearsal and concert into shared celebration rather than performance.

What to expect

Grounded in the profound spiritual tradition, this arrangement brings warmth, movement, and genuine joy to the concert stage. The combination of rich SATB harmonies and rhythmic vitality creates a piece that feels both reverent and alive, inviting the audience to feel the music alongside the singers.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs seeking energizing repertoire that combines musical substance with audience engagement. This octavo works especially well for programs that celebrate African American traditions and for directors who want students to experience choral music as a participatory, joyful art form.

How to get the most out of it

  • Teach the clapping and stomping patterns in isolation before adding them to the vocal lines; this builds ensemble precision and allows singers to focus on intonation during full runs.
  • Balance the spiritual's call-and-response sections so that soloists or small groups cut through clearly without overwhelming the harmonic foundation from the full choir.
  • Encourage singers to feel the rhythmic pulse through their bodies; this piece thrives when the ensemble commits to a strong, steady beat.

How to use it

Place this as a standalone showstopper or pair it with other spirituals to build a thematic set celebrating African American musical heritage. Its moderate difficulty and immediate audience appeal make it ideal for winter or spring concerts where you want to shift energy and mood without losing musical credibility.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing part independence within SATB texture
  • Rhythmic precision with body percussion (clapping and stomping)
  • Singing with spiritual style and emotional authenticity
  • Responding to call-and-response patterns
  • Maintaining intonation through syncopated harmonic movement
