Description

About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett has been composing and arranging music for concert and marching ensembles for decades. He joined the University of Oklahoma's composition and theory faculty in 2001, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses with an emphasis on 20th century music. Beyond the classroom, he serves as musical arranger for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band and continues to build an impressive catalog of published works performed by wind ensembles across the country.

Barrett's music has earned significant recognition in the field. His compositions have been featured on National Public Radio and performed by the Dallas Wind Symphony, All-State ensembles, and regional honor bands. He is a multiple ASCAPlus award recipient and has had his work presented at major conferences including the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention and the International Trumpet Guild. With over two hundred published pieces for symphonic band, chamber groups, and marching ensembles, Barrett's voice has become a trusted presence in contemporary band literature.

Why we love this

Structures brings contemporary writing to a grade level where students rarely encounter genuinely artistic concert pieces. Barrett's inspiration from the Callanish Standing Stones translates into accessible yet sophisticated scoring that lets young conductors shape real musical architecture. At Grade 2, this work respects both the musicians' developing abilities and their intelligence as performers.

What to expect

Structures evokes the quiet power and timeless presence of standing stones against a vast landscape. The music unfolds with patient intensity, building monumental resonance through layered instrumental colors rather than bombast. There is something both ancient and contemporary in its voice, creating a sense of awe that feels earned rather than imposed.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands seeking contemporary literature with artistic merit and cultural grounding. This score works well in programs where conductors want to expose young musicians to music inspired by real-world subjects and non-traditional sources. It suits ensembles ready to move beyond purely pedagogical repertoire into pieces written by a nationally recognized composer.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen carefully for vertical balance between your woodwind and brass sections; these layers of sound need definition without one color overwhelming the other.
  • Shape the broader musical arc before drilling individual passages. Understand where the piece builds energy and where it requires stillness so your students play with intention.
  • Allow the opening material to breathe. Resist the urge to rush; the monolithic quality of the title depends on expansive phrasing.
  • Mark cue points clearly in the conductor score and communicate them to your first-chair players so ensemble cohesion remains steady during transitions.

How to use it

Program Structures on a concert where it pairs well with other contemporary works or pieces exploring nature and landscape. At Grade 2, it works as an effective opener that sets a more ambitious artistic tone for the program. It also serves as a strong teaching vehicle midseason, once your band has basic ensemble fundamentals in place but still has developmental room to grow.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining ensemble balance across contrasting instrumental sections
  • Shaping longer phrases and understanding musical architecture
  • Responding to expressive conducting gestures and dynamic shaping
  • Reading and interpreting contemporary notation and compositional techniques
