About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes piano music with a keen understanding of what engages students at each developmental stage. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (graduated summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she studied with noted pianists Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich.

Bober's teaching experience spans two decades in public school music, university-level instruction, and private piano studio work. She has also served as a church pianist, accompanist, and music director. Her work as a clinician and composer has made her a sought-after presenter at conventions and workshops for piano teachers throughout North America. She lives in Minnesota with her husband Jeff.

Why we love this

Bober's gift for writing musically satisfying pieces at intermediate level shines here. The cascading arpeggios and scale work feel natural to the hand rather than mechanically imposed, and the harmonic pedaling instruction teaches real musicianship, not just technique. Students leave the practice room excited about what they can do.

What to expect

Sparkling Stream evokes the gentle, flowing motion of water catching light. The cascading passages create a sense of continuous movement, while the harmonic pedaling adds warmth and resonance that makes the delicate writing feel fuller and more substantial than the page might suggest.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to refine their touch and deepen their understanding of pedal technique will find this piece both approachable and rewarding. It suits students who have solid technique but need guided practice in shaping arpeggios expressively and managing hand crossovers gracefully.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the cascading arpeggios with a gentle, rolling touch rather than hammer-like articulation; let each note speak distinctly while maintaining fluid continuity.
  • Practice the left-hand crossovers slowly with deliberate attention to hand position; this builds confidence and prevents the hesitation that breaks musical line.
  • Listen carefully as you apply the harmonic pedal; change it between harmonic areas to avoid blurring the delicate texture the piece requires.
  • Work the scale passages at a tempo where your fingers can move with ease and clarity; speed will come naturally once the technique is secure.

How to use it

Slot this into a studio recital where you want a moment of lyrical contrast; it programs beautifully between a more dramatic piece and something faster or more rhythmically driven. The intermediate difficulty and refined character make it ideal for showcasing student growth mid-year.

Skills your students will build

  • Cascading arpeggios with even note spacing and controlled dynamics
  • Left-hand crossovers with smooth hand position shifts
  • Harmonic pedaling and selective pedal changes
  • Playing with a delicate, singing touch at the piano
  • Shape and phrasing in flowing scale passages
