About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober brings two decades of public school teaching experience and advanced training in both music education and piano performance to her compositions. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (graduating summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she studied under accomplished pianists Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich.

Beyond the studio, Bober has served as a church music director and remains active as a church pianist and accompanist. Her reputation as an engaging clinician has made her a frequent presenter at piano teacher conventions and workshops throughout North America. She continues to teach private piano students in Minnesota while composing pieces designed to deepen her students' musical understanding and engagement.

Why we love this

Bober writes with an ear for what intermediate pianists actually enjoy performing. The cascading arpeggios and scale work here feel musical rather than mechanical, and the gentle touch required makes this a perfect vehicle for teaching tone control without the technical overwhelm that often accompanies similar repertoire.

What to expect

Sparkling Stream evokes the gentle, flowing movement of water over stones. Each cascade of arpeggios dances across the keyboard with clarity and grace, creating an impression of lightness and calm rather than technical display.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to refine their touch and explore more sophisticated textural writing. This piece suits students who have solid technique but are still building confidence in interpreting contemporary pedagogical repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the cascading arpeggios with a slight swell in the middle of each phrase rather than treating them as purely decorative passage work; this transforms them from filler into compelling musical lines.
  • Practice the left hand crossovers slowly and separately until they feel comfortable, then integrate them with the right hand at a steady tempo before attempting the full performance speed.
  • Experiment with your pedal changes to support the harmonic movement; mark exact pedal points in your score so you develop consistency across performances.
  • Perform the entire piece with a whispery dynamic; resist the urge to crescendo, and let the delicate textures speak for themselves.

How to use it

Program this as a elegant solo for a student recital or informal performance setting where its transparent texture and moderate length (typical of pedagogical solos) fit naturally into a varied program. It also works well as a confidence-builder for a student preparing for their first formal performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Control of touch and tone production across arpeggiated passages
  • Left hand independence and crossover technique
  • Strategic pedal application to support harmonic progression
  • Musical phrasing of scalar and arpeggiated figurations
  • Reading and executing intermediate-level musical interpretation marks
