Description
Sound Innovations: Sound Development emphasizes playing with a characteristic beautiful sound. The components of producing this sound are broken into four levels, consistent with the revolutionary Sound Innovations structure: (1) Sound Tone, (2) Sound Bowings, (3) Sound Shifting, and (4) Sound Scales, Arpeggios, Chorales, and Rhythms. The flexible levels can be used in the order that is best for your students, as individual warm-ups or as structured units. Your students will learn the proper use of the bow with the variables of tone, the next group of bowings needed for intermediate repertoire, and how to shift and play with vibrato. These skills are reinforced with comprehensive scales, arpeggios, sight-reading materials, rhythm exercises, and warm-up chorales. Video demonstrations of key skills are referenced in the book and can be viewed online at www.alfred.com/SoundDevelopmentVideo.

Why we love this

Phillips built this intermediate resource on the foundation of what actually works: a clear sequence for developing beautiful, characteristic tone in young players before layering complexity. The four-part structure (tone, bowings, shifting, scales and arpeggios) respects the order of physical and musical development, so students master foundational skills before applying them to repertoire. Video demonstrations tied directly to the exercises remove guesswork from the practice room.

What to expect

Opening this book, intermediate bassists encounter exercises designed not to intimidate but to clarify. Each section builds on genuine physical sensation (bow weight, contact point, finger placement on the fingerboard) rather than abstract concepts. The progression from isolated tone work through applied scales and sight-reading feels like mastery becoming visible.

Who it's for

String orchestra programs serving intermediate bass players (typically grades 4-8, depending on program start age) who need systematic development of tone production, shifting technique, and vibrato. Conductors and private bass teachers also use this material for individual lessons and sectionals, since the modular structure allows flexible, targeted work on specific technical challenges.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the Sound Tone section first to establish consistent bow contact and pressure before advancing to more demanding bowings. Students hearing themselves produce a characteristic sound early build confidence and commitment to the rest of the material.
  • Use the video demonstrations referenced in the book to show students exactly what proper shifting and vibrato initiation look like in real time. Seeing a professional bassist execute the motion clarifies what you're asking for verbally.
  • Rotate through the scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading exercises in rehearsal warm-ups rather than treating them as homework-only material. Five minutes of focused ensemble work on these exercises daily creates muscle memory faster than individual practice alone.
  • Apply the chord progressions and rhythm exercises to repertoire your students are actively learning. When a shift or bowing pattern appears in a piece they care about, reference the specific exercise from the book that prepares them for it.

How to use it

Use this as your rehearsal warm-up foundation for the entire intermediate level, spending 2-3 weeks on each section before moving to the next. When your orchestra tackles an intermediate piece that demands cleaner shifts or more secure bowing choices, pull the corresponding exercise from Sound Development to isolate and solve the problem before returning to the full piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Bow control and tone production through consistent contact point and pressure variables
  • Intermediate bowing techniques required for standard orchestral repertoire
  • Clean position shifts with proper intonation and minimal sound interruption
  • Vibrato initiation and control on intermediate-level passages
  • Major and minor scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions across multiple positions
  • Sight-reading fluency in intermediate keys and time signatures
  • Rhythmic accuracy and ensemble coordination through warm-up chorale exercises
