Description
Sound Innovations: Sound Development emphasizes playing with a characteristic beautiful sound. The components of producing this sound are broken into four levels, consistent with the revolutionary Sound Innovations structure: (1) Sound Tone, (2) Sound Bowings, (3) Sound Shifting, and (4) Sound Scales, Arpeggios, Chorales, and Rhythms. The flexible levels can be used in the order that is best for your students, as individual warm-ups or as structured units. Your students will learn the proper use of the bow with the variables of tone, the next group of bowings needed for intermediate repertoire, and how to shift and play with vibrato. These skills are reinforced with comprehensive scales, arpeggios, sight-reading materials, rhythm exercises, and warm-up chorales. Video demonstrations of key skills are referenced in the book and can be viewed online at www.alfred.com/SoundDevelopmentVideo.

Why we love this

Phillips constructed this intermediate viola method around the neuroscience of sound production rather than arbitrary exercises. The four-level structure (tone, bowings, shifting, scales and arpeggios) isolates each technical variable so students understand what they're controlling and why, making rehearsal time far more efficient than books that stack concepts together. The inclusion of referenced online video demonstrations bridges the gap between the printed page and kinesthetic learning, which is essential for bow technique.

What to expect

Working through this book feels like removing obstacles rather than building from scratch. Each section isolates one technical element so the viola section can hear and feel the difference between a rushed shift and a confident one, between thin tone and resonant tone. There's a tangible satisfaction in understanding why a bow stroke works the way it does.

Who it's for

Intermediate viola students in string orchestras who have mastered fundamental position playing and are ready to develop characteristic tone production and the bow control that supports it. This book serves violas who are preparing for more advanced repertoire and need systematic instruction in the shifting, vibrato, and bowings that intermediate and advanced literature demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Access the online video demonstrations referenced throughout the book; they show exact bow angles and contact points for each tone production exercise, making the invisible aspects of viola sound visible.
  • Work through the Sound Tone section as your primary warm-up before tackling shifting and vibrato, since tone control forms the foundation for everything that follows.
  • Use the chorales in the final section as both reinforcement of shifting and vibrato and as repertoire for sectional rehearsals, allowing viola voices to hear their sound within harmonic context.
  • Return to individual levels as needed throughout the year rather than working straight through; if vibrato becomes unsteady, revisit Sound Tone to re-establish bow control and contact point.

How to use it

Assign sections of this book as targeted warm-ups during the rehearsal year; use Sound Tone at the start of fall rehearsals to establish section tone, then rotate through Sound Bowings and Sound Shifting as your intermediate repertoire demands those skills. The scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading materials slot naturally into weekly practice routines outside of rehearsal.

Skills your students will build

  • Bow control through tone variables (speed, pressure, contact point)
  • Intermediate bowings (staccato, détaché, legato variations) required for intermediate repertoire
  • Shifting with accuracy and minimal audible glissando
  • Vibrato integration with stable intonation
  • Scale and arpeggio facility in multiple keys
  • Sight-reading at the intermediate level
  • Rhythm accuracy in varied meters and subdivisions
