About the Authors
Born in 1953, Bob Phillips is an author, composer, pedagogue, and conductor recognized as a pioneering force in string education. He has established himself as a leading expert in large group pedagogy and the development of diverse musical styles for string ensembles. His educational materials reach thousands of young string players annually through performances in classrooms and concert halls worldwide.
Phillips has authored more than 25 book series for educational use, including all six levels of the Sound Innovations series and groundbreaking publications exploring eclectic styles such as Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song. He has published over 200 compositions for orchestras and bands and is an award-winning ASCAP composer whose works are regularly performed at the Midwest Clinic. His instructional DVD series String Clinics to Go has become a resource for thousands of educators.
For 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips developed a string program serving over 700 students that became a nationally recognized model of excellence in both classical and eclectic music education. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which achieved international acclaim under his direction and performed more than 80 shows annually, including multiple performances at the White House and the Midwest Clinic. Phillips has conducted extensively with youth symphonies, all-state orchestras, and prestigious summer camps including those at Interlochen and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He served as resident conductor and arranger for Seattle's Wintergrass Festival for 12 years and worked as assistant music director and arranger for the professional ensemble Barrage 8.

Kirk D. Moss, Ph.D., is Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Programs at University of Northwestern – St. Paul. He holds a doctorate in Music Education with a conducting emphasis from the University of Florida, where he studied under Raymond Chobaz, Timothy Brophy, and Russell Robinson. His academic credentials also include a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree with high distinction from the University of Michigan.
Throughout his career, Moss has made significant contributions to music education and the orchestral community. He served as national president of the American String Teachers Association and chaired the ASTA National Orchestra Festival five times. His publications and compositions include the Sound Innovations series method books coauthored for Alfred Music and numerous string orchestra arrangements. His recognition includes the 2021 Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship from his current institution, an Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Florida School of Music, and six ASTA National Citation for Leadership and Merit awards.
Moss brings extensive classroom experience and a strong commitment to student development. He spent twelve years teaching orchestras at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, with groups that achieved distinction at state, national, and international competitions. His influence extends beyond his home institution through guest conducting, clinician work, and adjudication in nearly forty states and Australia. A former high school where he taught established an annual college string scholarship in his name. He and his wife, Deb, have been married for more than thirty-five years and have three children: Bethany, Luke, and Lydia.
