Description
Sound Innovations: Sound Development for Advanced String Orchestra continues the emphasis on playing with a characteristic, beautiful sound, but also focuses on 3-octave scales, particularly scales that students will need for regional auditions and all-states. Advanced technical skills are presented in four levels, consistent with the revolutionary and flexible Sound Innovations structure: (1) Sound Tone, (2) Sound Bowing, (3) Sound Shifting, and (4) Sound Scales and Arpeggios. The levels can be used in the order that is best for your students, as individual warm-ups, or as structured units. The perfect book to follow Sound Development for Intermediate String Orchestra, or for any advanced string ensemble or individual learner, your students will further refine the proper use of the bow, bow strokes, shifting, and 3-octave scales.

Why we love this

This book directly addresses what advanced students actually need: the technical foundation for competitive auditions and all-states. The structure itself is liberating. Rather than forcing a linear approach, the four levels (Sound Tone, Sound Bowing, Sound Shifting, Sound Scales and Arpeggios) can be deployed in any sequence that matches your ensemble's growth, used as focused warm-ups, or studied systematically depending on what your violins need most right now.

What to expect

Moving through these studies feels purposeful and demanding. You are not repeating fundamental exercises; you are refining a craft. The 3-octave scales demand precision across the entire fingerboard, and the shifting sequences require you to trust your ear and your hand placement in ways that open up the violin's full range.

Who it's for

Advanced violin students preparing for regional auditions, all-state competitions, and serious chamber work. This resource also serves advanced string orchestras that have moved through the intermediate materials and need systematic development of professional-level technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Return to the Sound Tone section regularly, even as students advance. Beautiful tone remains the foundation; technical facility built on poor tone production will plateau quickly.
  • Use 3-octave scales as a diagnostic tool during rehearsal. How students voice those scales reveals gaps in shifting technique, hand position, and intonation that smaller technical work may mask.
  • Integrate shifting exercises into sectional rehearsals focused on repertoire demands. If your audition season pieces require specific shift patterns, anchor that technical work to the musical context students are already learning.
  • Front-load the bowing section before tackling the most rhythmically complex passages in your performance repertoire. Clean bow control and stroke consistency will accelerate progress on fast passage work.

How to use it

Assign sections to individual students based on identified technical needs rather than moving everyone through the book in order. A violinist struggling with vibrato and tone color might focus on Sound Tone while another student ready for competitive auditions moves directly into Sound Scales and Arpeggios. Use these materials alongside your performance repertoire in the weeks before audition season as intensive skill reinforcement.

Skills your students will build

  • 3-octave scale facility in all keys
  • Shifting technique across multiple positions
  • Bow control and advanced bow strokes
  • Vibrato and tone production at an advanced level
  • Intonation accuracy across the full range of the instrument
  • Arpeggios for audition and ensemble repertoire
