About the Authors
Bob Phillips, born in 1953, stands as a pioneering figure in string education. As an author, composer, pedagogue, and conductor, he has fundamentally shaped how large group instruction is approached in music classrooms. His innovative work in developing eclectic musical styles for string students has earned him recognition as one of today's most prolific educational composers.
Over 25 book series bear Phillips' name, with thousands of string students annually performing from his publications. His Sound Innovations series spans all six levels, while his ground-breaking eclectic collections include Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, and Mariachi Philharmonic, among others. He has seen more than 200 works published for orchestras and bands and holds recognition as an award-winning ASCAP composer whose pieces regularly appear on Midwest Clinic programs.
For 27 years in Saline, Michigan, Phillips built a string program exceeding 700 students that became a national model for excellence across both classical and eclectic repertoires. The Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, which he founded and directed, gained international prominence through over 80 annual performances, multiple White House appearances, and regular Midwest Clinic presentations. Phillips has conducted extensively for youth orchestras, all-state ensembles, and prestigious camps including Interlochen and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He served 12 years as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle and has also worked as assistant music director and arranger for the professional string ensemble Barrage 8. His instructional DVD series, String Clinics to Go, continues to support thousands of music teachers.

Kirk D. Moss serves as Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Programs at University of Northwestern – St. Paul. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Education with a conducting emphasis from University of Florida, where he studied under Raymond Chobaz, Timothy Brophy, and Russell Robinson. His educational background also includes a Master of Music degree from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree with high distinction from University of Michigan.
Throughout his career, Moss has received numerous accolades including the 2021 Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship at his current institution and six ASTA National Citations for Leadership and Merit. The University of Florida School of Music honored him with an Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award. He coauthored the Sound Innovations series method books for Alfred Music and has created numerous string orchestra arrangements. As a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, he has worked in nearly forty states and Australia.
Moss served as national president of the American String Teachers Association and chaired the ASTA National Orchestra Festival five times while maintaining a position on ASTA's Executive Board. During his twelve years teaching orchestras at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, his ensembles earned distinction at state, national, and international competitions. One of his former high schools established a college string scholarship in his name. He and his wife, Deb, have been married for more than thirty-five years and have three children: Bethany, Luke, and Lydia.
