About the Authors
Bob Phillips has shaped string education through a distinctive approach that blends rigorous pedagogy with adventurous repertoire. Born in 1953, he is a composer, conductor, and teacher trainer whose influence extends across thousands of classrooms. His output is staggering: over 25 instructional book series (including all six levels of Sound Innovations) and more than 200 published works for orchestras and bands. His eclectic styles publications—Fiddlers Philharmonic, Jazz Philharmonic, Rock Philharmonic, Mariachi Philharmonic, Latin Philharmonic, and Fiddle and Song—fundamentally expanded what string programs could explore musically. Phillips is an award-winning ASCAP composer whose works appear regularly on Midwest Clinic programs.
For 27 years, Phillips built the string program in Saline, Michigan into a national model, growing it to over 700 students and earning recognition for excellence in both classical and eclectic music. He founded the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, a folk-fiddling ensemble that performed more than 80 concerts annually and established an international reputation, including multiple performances at the White House and the Midwest Clinic. His String Clinics to Go instructional DVDs have become standard resources in countless music rooms.
His conducting resume reflects his standing in the field: he has led all-state orchestras and honors ensembles across multiple states, youth symphonies, and prestigious summer programs including Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Interlochen. Phillips served as resident conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle for 12 years and as assistant music director and arranger for the professional string ensemble Barrage 8.
