About the Composer: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, complemented by a California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings both pedagogical insight and compositional craft to her work. Beyond her writing and teaching, she performs regularly and finds creative renewal through travel, swimming, reading, and cycling.

Why we love this

Gray's gift for melody and accessibility shines throughout this carol. The piece balances genuine musical substance with the kind of straightforward vocal writing that lets singers focus on expression rather than technical wrestling, making it equally rewarding in December rehearsals and performance.

What to expect

The music opens with a gentle, contemplative quality that honors the carol's sacred roots while maintaining an approachable, warm character. There's a sense of quiet joy and reflection throughout; this is singing meant to draw listeners inward rather than dazzle them.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for any choir looking to add a fresh sacred piece to their winter season. It's equally suited to community and school choirs seeking something singable yet substantial, and to churches seeking meaningful Christmas literature beyond the most familiar carols.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the recorded accompaniment early in rehearsals so singers can hear how their lines fit into the harmonic texture and build confidence quickly.
  • Shape phrases through gentle dynamic swells rather than dramatic contrasts; the carol's spiritual character calls for warmth and reverence over theatrical impact.
  • Balance the choir's blend by listening for the soprano line as your anchor, then nest alto, tenor, and bass around it for unified tone.

How to use it

Pair this with both traditional and modern Christmas repertoire to create programming depth. Its accessible character makes it an excellent choice for a mid-concert placement where you want to settle an audience into genuine listening after an opening set of lighter selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with blend and balance across four voice parts
  • Phrasing sustained melodies without obvious breath breaks
  • Following recorded accompaniment while maintaining independent vocal lines
  • Expressive singing grounded in reverent, spiritual character
