About the Composer: Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan brings four decades of band direction experience to his work as a composer and arranger. A Virginia educator who taught in Albemarle County for 36 years, he holds degrees from Bridgewater College and James Madison University, where he currently serves as a University Supervisor and adjunct instructor in arranging. His compositions and arrangements have reached audiences across the United States, performed at venues ranging from the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic to the White House, and his contributions to music education have earned recognition including the Central Virginia Outstanding Middle School Teacher Award and multiple Outstanding Educator honors.

Fagan remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and performer, serving as Assistant Director and percussionist with the Charlottesville Band. His involvement with the Music Educators National Conference, Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the National Band Association reflects his sustained commitment to the profession. As a member of ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, he continues to compose and arrange for concert bands and string orchestras.

Why we love this

Shadowlands strikes that rare balance for Grade 1 repertoire: genuinely atmospheric without requiring virtuosic technique. Fagan uses simple harmonic language and accessible ranges to build genuine tension and mood, giving beginning bands an early experience with pieces that demand musical maturity rather than technical fireworks. Directors will appreciate how the scoring lets younger musicians feel like they're performing something with real dramatic purpose.

What to expect

Shadowlands unfolds like a journey into an uneasy, dimly lit realm. Fagan's orchestration draws dark colors from the band palette without demanding advanced techniques, creating an introspective soundworld where sparse textures and careful harmonic choices evoke strangeness and apprehension. The piece maintains forward momentum while resisting conventional warmth, keeping listeners suspended in its shadowy atmosphere.

Who it's for

This score suits beginning concert bands preparing their first fall festival or winter concert repertoire. Grade 1 instrumentation requirements mean accessibility for younger ensembles while maintaining artistic credibility, making it an excellent choice for middle school bands or high school groups with limited numbers.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening gestures with deliberate dynamic control; even at a young band's volume level, the contrast between soft and slightly fuller passages creates the otherworldly quality Fagan intended.
  • Balance the melodic line carefully across sections so the tonal narrative remains clear without any single voice overwhelming the texture.
  • Maintain steady, unflinching tempo work; the dreamlike atmosphere depends on rhythmic precision rather than rubato.
  • Pay particular attention to entrance clarity when parts enter after rests; crisp attacks enhance the mysterious, unsettling character.

How to use it

Program Shadowlands as a concert opener to establish mood and capture attention immediately, or as a contrasting centerpiece between lighter works. Its brief length and atmospheric nature make it particularly effective in festival adjudication contexts, where it demonstrates both ensemble control and musical sensibility at an early level.
