About the Composer: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw stands as one of the most recorded choral composers in music education, with nearly 20 million copies of his work performed globally. His formal training spans Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University, plus a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. Beyond composition, Shaw has built a distinguished conducting career, founding and directing acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, University of Missouri at Kansas City, and Southern Oregon University.

Shaw's influence extends across five continents through residencies, clinics, and master classes. His collaborative work with jazz luminaries including Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks shaped his distinctive musical voice. With over 2,500 choral arrangements and compositions in print, multiple ASCAP awards, and a recent commission from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Shaw continues to define the landscape of contemporary choral music. He co-wrote Scroogical, an original musical adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, with his wife Markita.

Why we love this

Shaw's gift for comic timing and rhythmic zaniness shines here. This octavo delivers the humor your students will actually enjoy performing, with the kind of personality that makes even reluctant singers reach for their sheet music. The vaudeville-meets-country character gives your holiday concert a refreshing jolt of irreverence.

What to expect

Unpredictable and spirited, with a wink and a nudge throughout. The vaudeville DNA means theatrical flair and tight ensemble comedy; the country influences ground it in a folksy warmth that keeps it from feeling too campy. You'll hear your singers cracking smiles during rehearsal.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs looking for genuine laughs during concert season. Directors who want their students engaged and having fun with novelty material that doesn't compromise musical integrity. Holiday programs that need relief from the standard sentimental fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the comedic timing; these reindeer cousins deserve exaggerated delivery without sacrificing blend and intonation.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment as a pacing guide during early rehearsals, then pull away from it as your choir gains confidence with the quirky rhythmic figures.
  • Highlight the shifts between vocal jazz sensibilities and country-inflected phrasing; Shaw writes these contrasts intentionally, and they're what generate the humor.
  • Let dynamic contrast amplify the absurdity. The zany character lives in sudden drops and swells, not in uniform singing.

How to use it

Program this as a palate cleanser between more serious holiday selections, or anchor it as the closer to send audiences out laughing. It pairs naturally with other Shaw novelties or lighter contemporary works, and works equally well in winter holiday shows or end-of-semester concerts that need an energy boost.

Skills your students will build

  • Comic ensemble timing and rhythmic precision in a novelty idiom
  • Blending vocal jazz and country inflections within a single arrangement
  • Character development and theatrical expression in choral singing
  • Reading syncopated rhythmic patterns and mixed stylistic phrasing
