About the Arranger: Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen

Carl Strommen's arrangements and compositions span band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and choral literature, establishing him as one of the most frequently performed composer/arrangers across North America and beyond. His work appears regularly in concert halls, broadcast media, and film scores. He holds the position of adjunct professor of orchestration and composition at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and maintains an active schedule as a clinician and commissioned composer. His consistent output has earned him annual recognition through the ASCAP Standard Writers Award.

Strommen studied at City College of New York and has maintained deep ties to the academic music world throughout his career. He lives on Long Island and divides his time between the East Coast and Colorado.

Why we love this

Strommen's medley approach lets you program substantial Broadway repertoire without overloading rehearsal schedules with five separate pieces. The arrangement respects the melodic identity of each standard while crafting seamless transitions that keep audiences engaged for the full seven and a half minutes. Community orchestras especially benefit from material this accessible yet musically satisfying, where players at Grade 4 can deliver a professional-sounding concert without heroic technical demands.

What to expect

Nostalgic and warm, with the comfortable familiarity of songs audiences have heard for generations. Strommen's orchestration lets each melody breathe while maintaining forward momentum, creating an experience that feels celebratory without becoming saccharine.

Who it's for

Community orchestras and regional ensembles seeking audience-friendly programming that showcases musicianship without requiring virtuosity. Directors working with intermediate-level orchestras can program this as a standalone feature or pair it with classical repertoire to create thematic variety in a concert.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic voices across your string and wind sections as tunes pass between families. Many players will know these songs and naturally want to support their own line; gently redirect attention to phrase shape and ensemble blend rather than prominence.
  • Treat each tune's character distinctly. The energy of "Give My Regards to Broadway" differs fundamentally from the tender lyricism of "My Funny Valentine." Use your tempo and dynamic choices to clarify these shifts for the audience.
  • Conductor scores of 28 pages reward careful score study. Mark your key structural moments and transitions in advance so you can lead them with confidence rather than hunting on the page.

How to use it

Schedule this as a centerpiece of a pops concert or a bridge between classical and popular repertoire on a mixed program. The recognizable melodies and uplifting character make it ideal for community engagement concerts, fundraisers, or season-opening events where you want to connect with broad audiences.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and accompaniment across different instrumental families
  • Responding to conductor-led tempo and character shifts within a medley structure
  • Executing smooth transitions between distinct musical phrases
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion at Grade 4 technical levels
