About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck leads choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works for singers of all ages. His output spans concert repertoire, vocal resources, and children's musicals; his pedagogical writing includes Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. Beck's music reaches choirs worldwide, as evidenced by countless performances shared online.

As a tenor and director, Beck remains active in performance and education. He has guest conducted honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the Southeast, serves as an adjudicator and clinician, and has been an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992. His degrees from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, combined with his work in musical theatre and chamber choral performance, inform a body of work that consistently prioritizes music literacy and artistry.

Why we love this

Beck's secular choral writing balances accessibility with musical substance. This piece works equally well in concert settings or festival competitions, giving you programming flexibility without sacrificing artistic integrity. The included PianoTrax digital download means your rehearsals stay efficient while singers focus on their vocal line.

What to expect

Riversong evokes flowing water and natural landscape through its lyrical melodic contour and harmonic progression. The piece creates a meditative, contemplative mood that allows singers to connect emotionally with the text while maintaining musical accessibility.

Who it's for

This choral octavo suits mixed-voice choirs at the high school and adult level, as well as advanced middle school ensembles. Directors preparing for concert performances or festival competitions will find a piece that is musically rewarding without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Rehearse with the PianoTrax accompaniment from the start so singers hear the harmonic context in real time rather than piecing it together from isolated voice parts.
  • Balance the inner voices carefully in the key of F; many singers will naturally support the melody, so direct attention to supporting the foundational harmonic structure.
  • Conduct with attention to phrase breathing so the piece flows as one continuous musical thought rather than a series of smaller sections.

How to use it

Open a concert with this piece to establish a calm, reflective tone, or pair it with other nature-themed repertoire for a thematic set. Its moderate difficulty and broad appeal make it suitable for festival performances where you want to showcase your choir's blend and musicality without requiring extended rehearsal time on technical challenges.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in the key of F with secure intonation across all voice parts
  • Blending within a mixed-voice texture while maintaining individual line clarity
  • Sustaining legato phrasing across longer melodic passages
  • Responding to harmonic progression to refine tuning in functional harmony
