About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works performed by singers across the globe. His contributions to choral pedagogy include widely adopted vocal resources such as Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and a Master's degree in Music Education from Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond his publishing work, Beck maintains an active presence as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, serving honor choirs and all-state groups throughout the United States and Southeast. A tenor himself, he performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, directs musical theatre productions, and has contributed his voice to Alfred Music recordings since 1992. His dual commitment to choral artistry and music literacy shapes both his original compositions and the resources he shepherds through Alfred's catalog.

Why we love this

Riversong captures the fluidity of water through genuinely singable vocal writing while the integral piano part does real musical work rather than simply doubling voices. The inclusion of recognizable river song quotations at the piece's conclusion gives singers a satisfying moment of discovery and provides natural talking points about musical connection across time and genre.

What to expect

Riversong flows with natural ease, evoking the unhurried movement of water through landscape. The writing feels organic rather than artificial, allowing singers to experience the poetry of a nature subject through genuinely musical rather than merely descriptive means.

Who it's for

Two-part choirs of any age seeking repertoire that feels contemporary yet accessible. Directors can program this for choirs building confidence in part independence, since the two voicings maintain distinct melodic lines while remaining singable for developing musicians.

How to get the most out of it

  • Allow the opening phrases to breathe; the fluid melodic lines gain power from unhurried phrasing rather than pushed tempo.
  • Balance the two parts so neither dominates; this piece rewards singers who listen across the ensemble and adjust dynamics accordingly.
  • Collaborate with your pianist on the accompaniment's role as an equal voice; the piano carries harmonic and rhythmic independence that shapes the overall texture.

How to use it

This piece works beautifully in spring or summer concerts focused on nature themes, or as a contrasting lyrical moment within a larger program of diverse styles. The familiar song quotations near the end make it particularly effective as a finale that leaves audiences with a sense of musical connection.
