His compositions have been performed by everyone from professional symphony orchestras to elementary school ensembles in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House.

Recognized with the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and winner of the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest, Balmages holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association. He received the James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award and was later commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the institution's presidential inauguration. His music has also been featured in high-profile national events, including the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service. As Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic, Balmages continues to shape music education through both composition and leadership.

Why we love this

Balmages understands what string orchestras need at the 3.5 level: enough technical substance to challenge growing players without sacrificing the visceral satisfaction of driving, modern writing. The perpetual motion keeps everyone engaged throughout while the lyrical section offers a genuine moment of contrast rather than mere filler, making this a piece that rewires students' ears for what string writing can express.

What to expect

Perpetual motion collides with lyrical breathing space in this high-octane work. The piece pulses with momentum and drive, building relentlessly toward a climax that feels both powerful and genuinely earned, creating an exhilarating arc for both players and listeners.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the intermediate-advanced level who want contemporary writing with real substance and energy. This works for groups ready to handle virtuosic rhythmic demands and groups seeking material that connects with modern audiences rather than relying on traditional classical forms.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a clear pulse in early rehearsals and let it anchor every section. The relentless character depends on rhythmic precision across all parts, not aggressive tempo.
  • Shape the lyrical melody with genuine lyricism during that contrasting section, allowing it to breathe as a true departure from the driving pulse rather than a slower version of the same energy.
  • Build the final dramatic arch gradually through your conducting and dynamic clarity. Resist the urge to rush the conclusion; let the intensity come from focus and commitment.

How to use it

Program this as an opener or closer on a concert where you want to establish energy and modernity. It pairs well alongside classical repertoire to show the range of string orchestra writing, and its contest-worthy construction makes it ideal for festival programming or competitions.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision and pulse integrity in perpetual motion passages
  • Contrasting lyrical playing with energetic, driving articulation
  • Building dynamic intensity gradually across extended phrases
  • Balancing individual part clarity within dense textures
