More about this title

About the Composer: Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) composed nearly 70 operas during a career that made him one of the most performed composers of the 19th century. His gift for melody and dramatic pacing earned him a place alongside Rossini and Bellini as a master of Italian Romantic opera, and his influence shaped the development of vocal writing for generations.

Beyond his celebrated operatic works, Donizetti wrote significant choral and sacred music that deserves equal attention in ensemble rehearsals. His lighter secular pieces reveal the same compositional wit and harmonic sophistication that audiences discovered in his stage works, offering choral directors access to a composer whose theatrical sensibility translates beautifully to the concert hall.

Why we love this

Donizetti's theatrical flair shines in this piece without requiring elaborate staging or costume. The rhythmic momentum and character writing for TTBB voices give singers something genuinely fun to perform, and the 12-page length makes it a substantial but achievable addition to any concert program.

What to expect

Ra-ta-plan captures the buoyant energy and dramatic wit of the Italian stage. Rhythmic vitality drives the piece forward, while harmonic sophistication and voice-leading craft remind listeners that this comes from a master of dramatic music, not a lightweight novelty number.

Who it's for

This octavo suits TTBB choirs with solid intonation and rhythmic confidence, including collegiate, church, and community ensembles looking for concert repertoire that balances fun with musicality. Singers who enjoy theatrical character pieces and ensemble singing will find plenty to engage with in Donizetti's writing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the rhythmic vitality early. This piece thrives on forward momentum and crisp articulation; drilling the syncopated figures between voice parts during sectionals prevents the arrangement from feeling sluggish.
  • Balance the text clarity with ensemble blend. The rapid syllabic text demands that all four parts remain precise without sacrificing the unified sound that Romantic writing rewards.
  • Shape the phrases through dynamic contrast rather than tempo fluctuation. Let the natural cadences and harmonic arrivals breathe, but maintain the driving pulse underneath.

How to use it

Program this as a contrasting anchor in a concert featuring heavier Romantic repertoire, or pair it with other lighter secular works from the same era to create a suite of character pieces. Its theatrical appeal also makes it a natural fit for mixed concert programming where you want an audience-pleasing moment without sacrificing artistry.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in syncopated figures across four parts
  • Clear text articulation at brisk tempos
  • Balancing individual voice independence with ensemble blend
  • Phrasing and shaping within a conductor's framework
