Description
Continuing the expansion of note-reading skills begun in Levels 1A--2A, this book includes melodic and harmonic 7ths and octaves to aid the student with moving freely around the keyboard. New items include the introduction of C and G major scales, as well as three-note V7 chords in C and G. Dotted quarter and eighth-note rhythm patterns are added to other rhythms of gradually increasing complexity. Each piece on the CD was recorded at a performance tempo and a slower practice tempo.

Why we love this

The dual-tempo CD recordings (performance and practice tempos) provide students with models they can actually match at their own playing level, removing the frustration of trying to keep up with full-speed versions. The introduction of interval studies (7ths and octaves) builds genuine keyboard facility rather than relying on position reading alone, setting a stronger foundation for students moving into intermediate repertoire.

What to expect

The pieces strike a balance between technical purpose and musical enjoyment. Students experience the satisfaction of reading new note combinations and hearing themselves play recognizable melodies while building the muscle memory needed for smooth keyboard movement.

Who it's for

Piano students in their second year of instruction, typically ages 6-10, who have completed Levels 1A and 2A and are ready to expand their reading vocabulary and keyboard navigation. This book serves students who benefit from structured progression through scales, chord types, and rhythmic patterns at a measured pace.

How to get the most out of it

  • Play through the practice tempo recording first without the accompaniment to build confidence with note reading and rhythm before attempting the performance tempo.
  • When working through the V7 chord introductions, isolate the chord voicings in C and G separately before integrating them into the full pieces.
  • Use the melodic and harmonic 7th and octave exercises to develop awareness of hand position and interval shapes across different octaves on the keyboard.

How to use it

Use this as the core method book for second-year piano study, progressing sequentially through levels to ensure steady skill development. The introduction of major scales and seventh chords prepares students for the more complex harmony and repertoire they will encounter in subsequent levels.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading notes above and below the staff on both clefs
  • Identifying and playing melodic and harmonic 7ths and octaves
  • Building C and G major scales with proper fingering patterns
  • Playing three-note V7 chords in C and G major
  • Executing dotted quarter and eighth-note rhythms in combination with previously learned patterns
  • Navigating the keyboard with expanding interval awareness
