About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse studied music education and music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His eight-year tenure in rights and licensing for a major educational publisher gave him deep insight into what works in school choirs, and he served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America during that time.

As a composer, Althouse has created more than 800 choral works performed widely across the English-speaking world. He holds ASCAP membership and is a regular recipient of the organization's Special Award. Beyond original composition, he has compiled and arranged numerous vocal collections, co-authored influential pedagogical resources like The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, and contributed to the folk music landscape through his work with the Folk Art Society of America. He resides in North Carolina and has been active in regional choral organizations.

Why we love this

Althouse brings the rhythmic propulsion and harmonic sophistication that define his best work, making this spiritual arrangement feel both accessible and musically substantial. The two solo moments give featured singers something meaningful to own, while the rich piano part elevates the whole ensemble sound without overwhelming it.

What to expect

The spiritual carries forward with purposeful momentum, driven by rhythmic vitality that never sacrifices the depth of the text. There's an undercurrent of joy beneath the faith, supported by piano voicings that are both contemporary and grounded in gospel tradition.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for intermediate to advanced SATB choirs seeking substantial sacred repertoire with contemporary energy and traditional roots. It suits adult choirs, college ensembles, and strong high school programs ready to handle layered harmonies and stylistic conviction.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the rhythmic drive with careful attention to ensemble pulse. The forward momentum comes from precision, not tempo. Let the piano lock the rhythm while voices attend to phrasing.
  • Balance the solo sections generously. These moments should breathe with vocal clarity; they're not competition with the full choir but rather intimate interludes.
  • Prepare voices for the harmonic density in the SATB writing by sectional rehearsal. Mark places where inner voices carry harmonic weight, not just filler.
  • Use the PianoTrax 3 accompaniment early in rehearsal to establish the arrangement's feel and free singers from dependence on the piano during performance prep.

How to use it

Place this on a concert built around sacred traditions and spirituals, where it can anchor a set of related repertoire. Its rhythmic character also makes it suitable as a second-half opener, where it energizes the room without jarring a well-paced program.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing complex SATB harmony with sustained precision
  • Balancing individual voice lines within a rhythmically driven arrangement
  • Performing solo passages with appropriate weight and musical intention within an ensemble context
  • Responding to piano accompaniment that carries harmonic and rhythmic information
