About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built a reputation as a composer and conductor equally at home in orchestral, band, and chamber settings. His works have been heard at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House, performed by ensembles ranging from professional orchestras to school programs. He received the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light. He is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and holds the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

As a conductor, Balmages maintains active relationships with all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras worldwide, with notable guest appearances at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and the American School Band Directors Association National Conference. His music was performed during the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, and he was commissioned by the University of Miami to compose for the inauguration of its 6th president. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.
