About the Arranger: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and studied music composition and arranging at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees. After three decades leading high school music programs as educator and administrator, he transitioned to full-time composition work and has since published over 3,500 titles across choral, band, orchestral, handbell, organ, piano, and vocal genres.
Since 1973, Wagner's music has reached audiences globally through concert halls, broadcast media, and educational institutions. More than seventeen million copies of his compositions have been purchased worldwide. He now lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.
Why we love this
Wagner crafted this medley with holiday concert reality in mind: three recognizable Christmas songs, manageable difficulty, and a straightforward arrangement that singers learn quickly. The piano accompaniment sits perfectly in the background while remaining fully supportive, and the optional band combo brings a festive orchestral lift without requiring specialized instrumentation or rehearsal time.
What to expect
Bright and celebratory, with the familiar warmth of beloved Christmas songs woven together in a seamless flow. The uncomplicated four-part writing lets the melodies shine, creating an accessible yet polished sound that feels festive without overcomplication.
Who it's for
This octavo works beautifully for any school or community choir preparing a holiday concert on a tight timeline. The quick-learn quality makes it ideal for groups with limited rehearsal time, while the three recognizable melodies keep singers engaged and give audiences immediate musical pleasure.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the medley's three distinct sections by rehearsing each song's melodic character separately before connecting them; this clarity helps singers remember which tune comes next during performance.
- If using a recorded accompaniment, run several full-length rehearsals with it to ensure singers settle into a consistent tempo and don't rush the transitions between songs.
- Layer the band arrangement gradually during final rehearsals; start with piano alone, then add winds, then brass, so singers don't lose their parts under fuller orchestration.
How to use it
Close out a holiday concert with this medley as a full-ensemble finale, or use it as a cornerstone piece in a shorter winter program where rehearsal time is compressed. The optional band arrangement transforms it from a choir feature into a combined-ensemble moment that sends audiences home in a celebratory mood.
