About the Arranger: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner studied music at Butler University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees before returning to the classroom as a high school music educator and administrator for three decades. Since transitioning to full-time composition in the 1970s, he has become one of the most prolific and performed composers in American music education, with over 3,500 published works spanning choir, band, orchestra, handbell ensemble, and solo instrumental and vocal music. His compositions have reached audiences across concert halls, television, radio, and international broadcasts, with more than seventeen million copies in circulation worldwide. Wagner now lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner's medley arrangement captures the carefree energy of winter celebration without requiring a massive vocal range or complex harmonic vocabulary, making it genuinely accessible for mixed choirs at the high school and community level. The included digital accompaniment track gives singers a solid harmonic anchor, which is especially valuable when rehearsal time is limited or when your ensemble needs confidence in an ensemble piece performed mid-winter concert season.

What to expect

Bright, spirited, and uncluttered. The medley structure creates momentum without heaviness, and the straightforward harmonic language keeps the focus on the joy of the text and the charm of familiar winter imagery.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits mixed choirs (SATB) in high school, community, and church settings looking for an upbeat, seasonally appropriate piece that doesn't demand virtuosic vocal technique. It works equally well as a concert closer or a secondary ensemble number during holiday programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line clearly over the accompaniment so the winter imagery in the text shapes how listeners hear each phrase.
  • Keep the ensemble's energy consistent throughout the medley transitions; treat the piece as one unified statement rather than separate songs.
  • Work the rhythmic clarity of any rhythmic figures in rehearsal as a full section before focusing on internal voice independence.

How to use it

Schedule this during the second half of a winter concert where you want an mood shift toward lighter, more festive material, or pair it with another Wagner arrangement to create a program segment that showcases his gift for accessible, singable choral writing. The digital accompaniment makes it especially useful if you're short on rehearsal pianists or if you want to free your accompanist to support other pieces in the same concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending voices within a medley structure while maintaining consistent vowel formation
  • Following harmonic changes through a sectional arrangement
  • Responding to digital accompaniment cues in a recorded performance context
