About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of experience as both a choral composer and conductor, with performances spanning some of the world's most prestigious venues: Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall in London, and Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik. His work has earned ASCAP recognition, and he serves as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, where he shapes the landscape of contemporary choral literature.

Beyond the concert hall, Gilpin has expanded his creative reach into film scoring (winning Best Score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue" in 2021) and collaborative projects with acclaimed artists like Angela Brown. He holds membership in ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and is a Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin's arrangement captures the spirited energy of this folk staple while maintaining the accessibility that makes it work for singers at multiple levels. The SATB voicing sits comfortably and doesn't overshadow the text or melody; instead, it frames them beautifully. This is the kind of arrangement that feels fresh enough for concert programming yet approachable enough for festival consideration.

What to expect

The energy is folksy and conversational, with a tune that lodges in the ear immediately. There's a warmth to the SATB texture that honors the tune's traditional roots while the arrangement gives singers something substantial to sing, creating a sense of collective ownership rather than soloistic display.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for high school and college choirs, community ensembles, and even advanced middle school groups with solid musicianship. Directors seeking a folk piece that's straightforward to prepare yet musically satisfying will find this ideal for both concert and festival settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the rhythmic drive of the folk melody anchor the ensemble. Avoid dragging the accompaniment; keep it buoyant and light to match the character of the tune.
  • Balance the text clarity across all four voices. Folk melodies thrive on syllable precision, so crisply articulate consonants without sacrificing the natural speech rhythm.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to establish tempo and harmonic color, then gradually release singers from over-reliance on it during rehearsals so the ensemble builds internal security.
  • Find moments where the voices can lighten their tone slightly to invite the audience into the humor and informality embedded in the tune.

How to use it

Program this alongside other folk arrangements or American roots repertoire to anchor a thematic concert set. Its efficiency in rehearsal time makes it an excellent choice for festivals where preparation windows are tight, and its familiar melody appeals to audiences while showcasing choral artistry.

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision and forward momentum in folk idioms
  • Articulating text without losing the conversational tone of a folk narrative
