About the Arranger: Bob Lipton

Bob Lipton

Bob Lipton earned his B.M. in music education from San Francisco State University and has spent the past 19 years teaching orchestra and band to middle school students in Silicon Valley, California. His performance background is remarkably diverse: he plays tuba with regional symphonies in the Bay Area, has toured internationally with the Colombia Artists Bel Canto Brass, and performed at the San Francisco and Frankfurt Jazz festivals as well as the Filmfare Awards in Mumbai.

Why we love this

Lipton captures the melancholic grace of these Nordic dances without overcomplicated arranging. Four distinct waltzes with individual personalities create natural momentum through the piece, making it feel substantial without demanding advanced technique. The Grade 3 orchestration sits perfectly in that sweet spot where students feel accomplished playing real music rather than exercises.

What to expect

These waltzes evoke the quiet landscapes and introspective character of Northern Europe. While written as dances, they carry an emotional weight that prevents them from feeling light or purely recreational; instead, they settle into your ears with a kind of nostalgic charm.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 3 level looking for repertoire with real musical substance and Scandinavian flavor. This works equally well for ensembles exploring multicultural music or building a more adventurous concert program.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape each waltz as its own entity by adjusting tempo slightly and allowing the character to settle before transitioning to the next dance. This prevents the piece from feeling rushed and highlights what makes each section special.
  • Balance the melodic line between first and second violins carefully; these waltzes depend on clear phrasing and lyrical singing rather than thick texture.
  • Pay attention to the bittersweet quality in the harmonic movement. Avoid making this bounce lightly like a typical concert waltz; let the minor inflections and chromatic passages breathe.

How to use it

Pair this with a brighter contemporary piece or a standard masterwork to create a program that shows range. The Nordic character and accessible difficulty make it ideal for a mid-concert shift in mood, especially in festival or concert contexts where judges appreciate musical storytelling.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining melodic phrasing across phrase boundaries
  • Distinguishing character and tempo between related movements
  • Balancing parts in a transparent orchestration
  • Playing with expressive control at moderate tempi
