About the Arranger: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs the choral publications program at Alfred Music, where he has cultivated a catalog of over 450 choral works and vocal resources performed by singers across the globe. His output spans from concert arrangements and children's musicals to foundational choral resources including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique.

Beyond the page, Beck maintains an active presence as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician at honor choirs and all-state festivals throughout the United States. A trained tenor with degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, he continues to perform with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has been a studio vocalist for Alfred Music since 1992. His work reflects a deep commitment to music literacy, choral artistry, and the advancement of music education.

Why we love this

Beck's arrangement respects the spiritual depth of this traditional song while writing it accessibly for mixed voices at the SAB level. The PianoTrax accompaniment frees your pianist from doubling every voice, opening space for your singers to find their own resonance and blend without instrumental crutches.

What to expect

A spiritual rendered with warmth and directness; the arrangement honors the folk character of the melody while the three-part writing creates moments of gentle harmonic color. There's an invitation here rather than a proclamation, drawing singers and listeners into a song of playfulness and faith.

Who it's for

SAB choirs working toward festival or concert performance; choirs seeking a spiritual arrangement that sits comfortably in the upper-elementary to high school range without sacrificing musicality. This works equally well for community choruses and church choirs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the spiritual's natural phrasing rather than cutting it into rigid four-bar blocks; the melody breathes differently than hymn-tune arrangements, and allowing that freedom transforms the piece.
  • Emphasize the text as your primary interpretive guide; the words 'little David' and 'play' carry vernacular warmth that should inform your tempo choices and dynamic contours.
  • Balance the altos and tenors carefully during the harmonic passages, since three-part mixed writing can mask lower voices if your middle voices aren't singing with intention.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals or folk-based arrangements for a concert set that feels cohesive and culturally grounded. The accessible voicing and engaging text also make it suitable for inclusion in festival programs where variety and audience connection matter.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing across traditional song forms
  • Balancing part independence in three-part mixed writing
  • Interpreting rhythmic freedom within spiritual traditions
  • Blending with accompaniment that complements rather than doubles
