About the Composer: Daniel Brinsmead

Daniel Brinsmead

Daniel Brinsmead studied classical voice at the Australian National University's School of Music, earning his Bachelor of Music with Honours in performance. He went on to complete a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where he deepened his understanding of choral writing and ensemble leadership.

Brinsmead's compositions have garnered international recognition, including selection as one of eight winners from 918 entries for the Abbey Road Anthem Competition in 2011; his piece Come Sleep was recorded by Eric Whitacre and his ensemble. Based in Melbourne, he currently serves as Artistic Director of The Australian Children's Choir and Choristry, while maintaining an active practice as a singing and piano tutor, accompanist, composer, arranger, and orchestrator. His choral works have been performed worldwide.

Why we love this

Brinsmead crafts music that speaks directly to singers and audiences alike, balancing accessibility with genuine artistic substance. The pairing of a meaningful message about peace with music that feels both contemporary and warmly human makes this a piece directors reach for when they need something that performs beautifully and resonates emotionally, not just fills a slot.

What to expect

Sincere and hopeful without sentimentality. The music breathes with the quiet conviction of its message, inviting singers and listeners into a moment of shared purpose rather than demanding emotional display.

Who it's for

Any choir looking for repertoire that engages singers with a thoughtful, secular text and singable, well-crafted lines. It works equally well for high school ensembles seeking concert or festival material and community choirs that value music with substance and relevance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build dynamic control around the text's emotional arc; let the message shape your interpretation rather than imposing interpretive choices that override what Brinsmead's writing already suggests.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish ensemble confidence during sectional rehearsals, then gradually move toward independence so singers own the phrasing and breath.
  • Balance blend and projection; this piece benefits from a warm, unified sound that doesn't sacrifice clarity of text or melodic line.

How to use it

Pair this with other works about community and social themes to create a thematic concert program, or program it as a closing statement in a mixed repertoire concert where its message provides genuine resonance. It also serves concert and festival contexts beautifully.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining lyrical phrasing across longer musical phrases
  • Balancing individual voice clarity with ensemble blend
  • Interpreting secular text with emotional authenticity
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues and maintaining independence from backing tracks
