About the Composer: Sherri Porterfield

Sherri Porterfield

Sherri Porterfield directs choirs at Cedar Park Middle School in Cedar Park, Texas, where her ensembles have earned numerous first-place and sweepstakes awards at competitions and performed at several state music educators conventions. She has taught in Missouri and Kansas, served as an adjunct assistant professor of music education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and worked as a clinician and guest conductor with honor choirs across the country.

With over 175 published choral compositions to her name, Porterfield has built a reputation for writing that balances accessibility with artistry. Alfred Music Publishing and other major houses represent her work. Since 1997, she has received annual ASCAP awards for her compositions. A graduate of the University of Memphis (B.S.E. in music education) and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (Master of Music in choral conducting), she holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Porterfield writes with an instinct for what works in the rehearsal room. The ABA architecture gives students a clear formal roadmap while the text-painting and harmonic movement keep the piece musically intelligent. Conductors appreciate that the piano part serves the voices without demanding virtuosity, leaving space for the singers to shine.

What to expect

The piece unfolds with quiet dignity. Porterfield's harmonic language is warm but never sentimental, and the spare piano writing leaves room for the voices to create the emotional weight. There's a sense of focused prayer here, honest and direct.

Who it's for

SSA ensembles at the middle and high school level will find this piece rewarding. Contest-bound choirs benefit from its clean design and teachable structure, while any choir looking to add a reverent sacred work to a concert program will connect with its earnest expression.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the outer A sections with gentle dynamic breathing; the simplicity of the form invites singers to focus on tonal beauty rather than complexity.
  • Balance the three voice parts carefully in the B section so that the harmonic color shifts without any line disappearing.
  • Let the piano provide quiet support; resist the urge to thicken the accompaniment beyond what's written.

How to use it

This octavo fits naturally into a sacred or interfaith concert program, or as a spiritual centerpiece during a mixed-repertoire festival set. It also works well as a contest selection for choirs seeking material that demonstrates musicianship over technical difficulty.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with unified tone across three SSA parts
  • Understanding formal structure (ABA) and how it shapes musical interpretation
  • Balancing blend in a hymn-like harmonic context
  • Following text-to-music relationships in sacred works
  • Sustaining long phrases with controlled breath support
