About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both the publishing industry, where he spent eight years managing rights and licenses and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America, and prolific composition; he has more than 800 choral works in print performed worldwide.
Althouse's output extends across multiple formats: he is a published composer recognized by ASCAP with regular Special Awards, a co-writer of children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, and an author of widely used classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and Ready to Read Music. His arrangement work includes respected vocal solo collections such as Folk Songs for Solo Singers. He served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently advises the Folk Art Society of America.
Why we love this
Althouse's arrangement builds its impact through the contrast between restraint and release, giving your singers concrete dynamic moments to shape rather than sustained legit singing. The descant-style solo passages in treble voices create natural leadership moments, while the optional hand drum invitation lets you add texture without overwhelming the clarity of the a cappella writing.
What to expect
The spiritual unfolds with the patient momentum of a procession. Each phrase builds naturally from the walking tempo and grounded harmonic foundation, with dynamic shifts that feel earned rather than imposed. The optional hand drum, when used, anchors the piece in its roots without ceremony.
Who it's for
SAB choirs seeking repertoire that works for mixed ensembles without requiring extensive part dividing. Directors building programs for contests, festivals, and concerts will find the straightforward key and steady tempo accessible for developing singers while the dynamic writing and solo moments give performers something specific to execute.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the dynamic contrasts intentionally during rehearsal; mark where the ensemble pulls back and where it swells so the effect lands during performance, not accidentally.
- If using the hand drum, establish the pattern early and let it breathe independently from the vocal rhythm so it becomes a separate rhythmic layer rather than a doubled pulse.
- Rehearse the descant solos with confidence rather than reserve; these moments need clear projection to function as genuine foreground material against the three-part texture.
How to use it
This arrangement fits naturally into a spiritual-focused concert set or a festival program celebrating traditional choral music. Its steady, deliberate character also pairs well with contemporary pieces when you want to anchor a program's middle section in something listeners immediately recognize and trust.
Skills your students will build
- Executing and interpreting dynamic contrast in a cappella writing
- Singing with intonation stability in three-part SAB texture
- Leading and blending as a section soloist (treble descant passages)
- Responding to optional percussion accompaniment while maintaining vocal independence
