About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin's career spans multiple facets of the music world. As an ASCAP-awarded composer and conductor, he has led performances at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall. He also directs educational choral publications for Shawnee Press and has composed film scores, including the award-winning "Rosie's Rescue."

Beyond composition and conducting, Gilpin has pursued professional organizing and financial coaching, appearing on Fox and NBC affiliates as well as the television program "Hoarders." He remains active in ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and serves as a Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin crafts holiday material that actually teaches rather than just entertains. The driving rhythms propel singers forward without requiring complicated part-writing, making this arrangement ideal for building confidence in younger or less experienced choirs during the busy season.

What to expect

The energy is infectious and forward-moving. Driving rhythms create momentum that carries the piece, while the simplicity of the two-part voicing lets the melody shine. This is holiday music that feels celebratory without being saccharine.

Who it's for

Grade 3 and lower intermediate choirs looking for holiday material with immediate impact. Teachers working with developing singers will appreciate Gilpin's restraint with the voice parts, which allows students to focus on ensemble cohesion and rhythmic precision rather than technical difficulty.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the rhythm instruments from the start of rehearsal. Their presence anchors the driving pulse and frees your singers to focus on intonation and blend.
  • Record a rough accompaniment track early and let singers learn their parts independently. The 12 pages move quickly, so self-directed learning maximizes rehearsal time.
  • Balance the two parts carefully during full group singing. Grade 3 choirs often let part 2 get buried, so isolate that line for a full rehearsal to establish its presence and importance.

How to use it

Use this as a standalone opener or closer for a winter concert, particularly when you need something that lands immediately with an audience. Its straightforward charm also works well paired with a more reflective sacred piece, creating dynamic programming contrast.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic independence within an ensemble context
  • Blending two-part harmony with clear part definition
  • Responding to rhythmic instrumental accompaniment
  • Performing with stylistic energy and precision
