More about this title

About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has established herself as one of the most prolific voices in American choral music, with over 600 published choral works and 75 larger musicals and songbooks in active circulation. Her compositions have been performed at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, where she has led honor choirs and conducted festival events nationwide. As a long-time director of choral and vocal publications for Alfred Music and other major publishers, she shaped the landscape of school choral repertoire for more than thirty years. She holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A., Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A., Drama, 1977; M.M., Accompanying, 1979), and has been recognized with the ASCAP Special Music Award annually since 1987.

Beyond her compositional work, Albrecht is known for her innovative approach to choral movement and staging, an expertise she brings to bear across her catalog. She served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and received the organization's "Pillar of Leadership" award. In 2021, both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College honored her with Distinguished Alumna Awards. She lives in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband Jay Althouse, a composer and arranger in his own right.

Why we love this

The syncopated, hook-laden chorus is engineered for developing singers to grab onto something memorable and fun on first read. Albrecht's trademark integration of movement and staging potential turns what could be a straightforward spiritual into a performance opportunity that engages body and voice together. The flexible SAB voicing with cued baritone notes means your changing male voices won't sit out or struggle with uncomfortable ranges.

What to expect

Rooted in the spiritual tradition yet contemporary in its energy, this piece opens with intimate reverence before exploding into celebration. The syncopated rhythms and strong choral hook create infectious momentum that pulls singers and audiences alike into the joy of the piece.

Who it's for

Developing to intermediate mixed choirs with treble and lower voice singers of varying vocal maturity. The flexible voicing makes it accessible to ensembles with inconsistent male voice numbers or ranges, while the energized style appeals to singers looking for repertoire with contemporary appeal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Plant the spiritual's opening reference clearly so audiences recognize the familiar quote before the arrangement blooms into its own celebration.
  • Lean into the syncopation through rhythmic precision during rehearsal; lock the rhythmic figures before layering in dynamic expression.
  • Explore movement possibilities in sections marked for staging, since the piece is specifically designed to support choreography and physical expression.
  • Balance soprano and alto lines in the opening passage to establish warmth and cohesion before the full energy kicks in.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals or sacred works for a concert celebrating American choral traditions, or use it as a closing festival piece where its energetic celebration lands as a crowd-pleaser. The movement-friendly design makes it ideal for a concert that incorporates staging or for festival competitions where choral artistry beyond pure singing voice is valued.

Skills your students will build

  • Syncopated rhythm reading in a mixed-meter context
  • Balancing independence and blend across three parts
  • Phrasing and musical expression grounded in spiritual style
  • Integration of movement and staging with vocal performance
  • Flexibility in voice part placement (reading cued baritone notes when needed)
