Why we love this

This is a gospel original that earns its energy rather than borrowing it. The opening quote from a spiritual classic sets authentic tone, but the syncopated chorus is written with developing singers in mind, making the celebratory hook both accessible and genuinely fun to perform. The cued baritone notes give you real flexibility when your male section includes changing voices, and the movement and staging options let choirs own the performance rather than just stand still.

What to expect

Sacred joy tempered with reflection. The piece opens in quiet reverence before igniting into an exuberant, syncopated celebration that feels both rooted in tradition and thoroughly alive in the present moment. Singing this moves bodies and lifts spirits.

Who it's for

Developing middle school and early high school choirs seeking a contemporary spiritual with hooks that stick. The SAB voicing works for mixed ensembles where male voices are still solidifying, and the accessible but spirited writing rewards singers who engage fully with the style.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening quotation as a reflective moment before the energy shifts; let the contrast between the contemplative opening and the driving chorus land clearly.
  • Lock the syncopation in the chorus early; this rhythmic hook is the piece's heart, so invest rehearsal time in precision rather than rushing to performance readiness.
  • Use the cued baritone notes strategically when you have singers transitioning through voice changes, allowing them to contribute without straining.
  • Incorporate the movement suggestions deliberately; even modest staging enhances the spiritual celebration without requiring choreography expertise.

How to use it

Program this as a closer for a concert featuring spirituals or sacred music; the energy and optimism of the finish sends audiences out energized. It also works well in a festival or contest setting where you want to showcase both musicality and engaging performance, and its shorter length (12 pages) makes it an accessible addition to a varied program.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing syncopated rhythms accurately within a flowing, soulful context
  • Balancing parts in homophonic and call-response textures
  • Interpreting spiritual style and gospel phrasing
  • Coordinating singing with movement and staging
  • Reading and performing from cued alternate notes (baritone parts)
