More about this title

About the Composer: Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows composes for ensembles across the full spectrum of choral music, from children's choirs to adult festival groups. His works appear regularly on state and festival lists, and he commissions new pieces annually from a wide range of performing organizations. Burrows holds an undergraduate degree in music education from Southern Methodist University and a graduate degree in conducting from Texas Christian University. Based in Fort Worth, Texas, he serves as Director of Children's Ministries at FUMC while continuing to compose and build his catalog with major publishers.

Why we love this

Burrows writes choral music that speaks directly without sacrificing sophistication or musicality. This piece balances accessibility with the kind of harmonic and textural detail that keeps singers engaged through multiple rehearsals and performances.

What to expect

The piece carries warmth and directness in its musical language. Burrows' harmonic choices feel contemporary yet accessible, creating a sound that feels fresh without alienating singers or audiences unfamiliar with avant-garde choral writing.

Who it's for

Choirs preparing repertoire for concert or festival performance will find this piece both singable and musically substantial. It works for intermediate to advanced high school and adult choirs seeking secular material with clear programming appeal.

How to get the most out of it

  • Record a rough rehearsal pass early in the learning process and listen back as an ensemble. This builds awareness of blend and balance issues before they become habitual.
  • Separate the piece into short, achievable sections for initial learning. Burrows' writing often rewards focused attention on text clarity and part independence before full-choir run-throughs.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during sectional rehearsals so singers hear how their parts sit within the full harmonic context.
  • Shape the piece with dynamic intention rather than relying on the written marks alone. Let the text and musical content guide your expressive choices.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece of a concert or festival showing, where it can demonstrate your choir's ability to balance text delivery with musical cohesion. Its secular nature makes it useful for holiday programs, community concerts, or multi-piece competition sets.

Skills your students will build

  • Text projection and interpretive phrasing in contemporary harmonic settings
  • Blend and balance in mixed voicing
  • Following a recorded accompaniment with rhythmic precision
  • Awareness of harmonic function and chord resolution
