Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both publishing and composition; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, Althouse has amassed over 800 choral works performed regularly across the English-speaking world. He holds membership in ASCAP and is a consistent recipient of their Special Award for excellence in standard music composition.

Beyond his prolific output as a composer, Althouse has significantly shaped music education through his writing. He co-authored several children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, compiled respected vocal solo collections including Folk Songs for Solo Singers, and co-wrote The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. His educational books such as Ready to Read Music, Sixty Music Quizzes, and One-Page Composer Bios appear in countless music classrooms. A notable achievement includes co-writing I Hear America Singing with Albrecht, performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration. Althouse resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina, and contributes to the Folk Art Society of America's National Advisory Board.
