About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he earned the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both administration and composition; he spent eight years managing rights and licensing for a major educational publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

As a composer, Althouse has written more than 800 choral works performed regularly across the English-speaking world. His catalog ranges from children's musicals (co-written with Sally K. Albrecht) to pedagogical resources like The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. He is an ASCAP member and multi-time recipient of the ASCAP Special Award. Beyond composition, Althouse has authored numerous classroom materials and served in leadership roles with the North Carolina Master Chorale and the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse brings the gift of immediate singability to sacred music, and Gloria Allelu exemplifies his gift for melody that feels both fresh and inevitable. The recorded accompaniment frees your rehearsal time from piano duties, letting you focus entirely on blend, diction, and the emotional shape of the text.

What to expect

Gloria Allelu radiates jubilation through its text and melodic contour. The piece celebrates without overshooting into complexity, creating space for singers to find genuine joy in the music.

Who it's for

This work suits choirs at the intermediate level who are building confidence in sacred repertoire. It works equally well in concert settings and worship contexts, making it practical for school choirs with performance opportunities across multiple venues.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the recorded accompaniment establish the harmonic foundation early; this allows singers to internalize the chords without sacrificing ensemble precision.
  • Shape the text "Gloria Allelu" with rhythmic clarity so that the joy lands with each iteration.
  • Balance transparency in the voicing against the brightness of the accompaniment; resist the urge to sing over the track.

How to use it

Include this in a spring concert that pairs contemporary sacred works with traditional hymns, or feature it as part of a holiday service program where its brightness cuts through winter repertoire. The recorded accompaniment makes it an accessible choice for programs where piano support is limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained notes with consistent vowel shapes in a sacred style
  • Articulating rapid text passages cleanly while maintaining musicality
  • Blending with digital accompaniment without losing individual voice quality
  • Interpreting Latin text with appropriate phrasing and emotional weight
