More about this title

About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees. After spending three decades as a high school music director and administrator, he transitioned to full-time composition, a shift that has made him one of the most prolific creators in American music education.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 compositions across every major ensemble and format: choirs, bands, orchestras, handbells, organ, piano, and voice. His music has reached an estimated seventeen million performers worldwide and regularly appears in concert halls, broadcasts, and educational settings across the United States and internationally. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner captures the exact emotional moment students need at moving-up ceremonies without resorting to saccharine clichés. The hook sticks immediately, the lyrics motivate without preaching, and the accessible 2-part voicing ensures every singer leaves feeling like part of something bigger.

What to expect

The piece radiates optimism and forward momentum. Bright harmonies and a memorable melodic hook create an infectious energy that singers and listeners alike feel immediately, leaving everyone in the room believing in the message of growth and possibility.

Who it's for

Choirs of any age moving through a transition moment will connect with this piece. Middle school and high school choirs particularly benefit from the accessible voicing and motivational message, though elementary and adult choirs performing it for moving-up or celebration events will find equal success.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the catchy hook so it feels conversational rather than belted; let the lyrics land naturally and the rhythm do the lifting.
  • Encourage your singers to feel the upbeat character in their bodies; this piece thrives on physical energy and forward motion.
  • Layer the parts early in rehearsal so singers hear how the second part supports and completes the melody, building confidence in readers.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for moving-up ceremonies, where it will resonate with the moment and remain memorable for students marking a transition. It also works beautifully on spring or year-end concerts, motivational assemblies, or any occasion celebrating student achievement and potential.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in 2-part harmony with clear voice independence
  • Connecting lyrics and melody to convey meaning expressively
  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in catchy, syncopated material
  • Building ensemble cohesion through shared motivational text
