About the Composer: Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan brought his decades of band directing experience to composition after retiring from 36 years leading ensembles in Albemarle County. His works have traveled from regional festivals like the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic to performances at the White House and Virginia's gubernatorial inauguration, establishing him as a significant voice in contemporary band literature.

Fagan holds degrees in Music Education from Bridgewater College and a master's degree from James Madison University, where he has taught arranging as adjunct faculty and currently serves as University Supervisor. Beyond composing and arranging, he remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and percussionist with the Charlottesville Band, and has earned recognition including Central Virginia Outstanding Middle School Teacher and multiple Outstanding Educator Awards from state organizations.

Why we love this

Fagan wrote Flourish for Winds specifically for Harrisonburg High School's facility opening, which means the piece carries genuine commemorative weight without sacrificing musicality. At Grade 3, it offers substantial artistic content for mid-level bands, giving students real occasion music to perform rather than a generic contest selection. The commission context makes this an especially rewarding choice when celebrating your own program milestone or facility achievement.

What to expect

The work unfolds with the confidence and brightness befitting a building dedication, energetic without overreaching. Melodic lines soar and interweave, carried forward by purposeful accompaniment that keeps the ensemble moving through a narrative arc from opening gesture to closing affirmation.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 3 level ready to program a piece with real occasion and substance. Directors seeking music that honors a specific institutional milestone, facility opening, or celebration will find Flourish for Winds a natural fit.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the band so that thematic material carries over the full ensemble, whether it lands in woodwinds, brass, or mixed voicing. Fagan's scoring gives primary ideas to different sections throughout.
  • Attend carefully to dynamic shape within phrases rather than holding steady levels. The celebratory character emerges through subtle crescendos and releases that mark structural moments.
  • Ensure rhythm section precision early in rehearsal so that the melodic content can develop cleanly over a locked foundation.
  • Reserve full ensemble sound for designated climaxes. Strategic use of lighter textures in surrounding passages will amplify the impact when the band plays together at full voice.

How to use it

Program this as the centerpiece of a concert celebrating your band program's growth, facility upgrade, or season-opening concert. It lands solidly in the middle of a concert program, substantial enough to anchor a set without requiring the interpretive maturity demanded by advanced literature.

Skills your students will build

  • Balance and blend across different instrumental sections carrying primary material
  • Shaping phrases with intentional dynamic contours
  • Rhythmic precision in accompanying figures that support thematic material
  • Interpretation of concert band scoring that distributes melodic content across the ensemble
