• Attend to the syncopation in Line 1 and Line 2 by tapping the rhythm before playing. The sixteenth-note and rock/jazz patterns sit differently on the cello and bass than they do on treble instruments.
• Balance the bass line (Line 4) with the harmonies above it. A strong, steady bass gives the ensemble confidence, especially when the rhythm section is live rather than recorded.
• If using the accompaniment CD, rehearse first with the full performance track to hear how your parts fit into the arrangement, then move to the rhythm section track once players know their lines.
• Shape phrases in Line 3 (the most limited range) with small dynamic inflections. Restricted range can feel repetitive if the line stays metronomic.
