More about this title

About the Composer: Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud

Kathleen Massoud studied piano performance at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut and Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, establishing a foundation in both classical technique and music education. For more than two decades, she has maintained an independent piano studio and remains an active member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She served as president of the Southeastern Chapter of the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association and co-founded the Massoud Piano Studio in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1980 alongside her husband.

Beyond her teaching practice, Massoud pursues a rich creative life. She sings regularly with her church choir, contributes volunteer service to her faith community, and writes poetry. She is the mother of one daughter, Marianna.

Why we love this

Massoud builds broken chord work and scale facility into genuinely musical passages rather than isolated exercises. The combination of fluid melody and shimmering textures means students experience real artistry while strengthening the hand mechanics they need at the intermediate level.

What to expect

Emerald Toccata lives up to its descriptive title. The piece shimmers with elegant broken chord figures that shimmer beneath a singing melody, creating an impression of light and movement. There is a quiet richness here, inviting but never heavy.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists working to build fluency in broken chords and scale work without sacrificing musicality. This piece rewards players who have solid hand position and moderate technical facility but are still developing evenness and speed across longer technical passages.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the broken chord figures even and transparent; let the underlying harmonic colors speak without rushed or muddied playing
  • Shape the melody with clear direction and warmth, avoiding mechanical phrasing in faster passages
  • Practice the scalar sections hands separately first to establish secure finger patterns, then layer them gradually

How to use it

This works beautifully on a student recital as a polished, concert-ready solo that showcases technical growth without demanding virtuosity. It also serves well in mixed-level recitals where intermediate students share a program with more advanced players, holding its own through sheer musical substance.

Skills your students will build

  • Broken chord patterns across multiple octaves
  • Even scale passage work and scalar finger patterns
  • Melodic phrasing over accompaniment textures
  • Hand independence and transparency in texture
