About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over four decades as a composer, conductor, and tireless advocate for choral movement integration. A consistent ASCAP Special Music Award recipient since 1987, she has seen more than 600 choral works and 75 musicals and songbooks published, while conducting honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center. For thirty-plus years, she directed school choral, vocal, and elementary publications at major educational publishers, most recently at Alfred Music, where her influence on accessible, singable repertoire remains profound.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. A Cleveland native, she served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Omicron Delta Kappa and received their Pillar of Leadership award. In 2021, she was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she remains a board member.

Why we love this

Albrecht writes sacred music that trusts singers to find meaning through pure musicality rather than technical display. The SAB voicing opens this piece to mixed ensembles at all ability levels, and the PianoTrax accompaniment gives you flexibility to balance singers with piano support exactly as your rehearsal schedule demands.

What to expect

The piece carries a reverent, grounded quality that invites reflection without melodrama. Albrecht's harmonic language is warm and modern enough to resonate with contemporary singers, yet rooted in choral tradition.

Who it's for

Any mixed choir, from high school treble and lower voices to adult volunteer ensembles, seeking approachable sacred repertoire that doesn't compromise musicality. Conductors will appreciate both the accessibility and the emotional authenticity Albrecht brings to liturgical texts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the SAB voicing by seating singers so upper voices cut through without oversinging; Albrecht's writing rewards intimate tone over volume.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to identify exposed moments in rehearsal where individual voice parts need strengthening before adding full ensemble sound.
  • Shape the harmonic progression with clear part-to-part communication; let the piano guide sectional rehearsals so singers internalize their melodic function.

How to use it

Pair this with other Albrecht sacred works to build a thematic program around contemporary liturgical music, or use it as a centerpiece for a mixed-voices concert that showcases three-part writing. Its accessible difficulty makes it ideal for mid-season programming when singers have solid fundamentals but rehearsal time is limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading three-part mixed voicing (SAB)
  • Blending treble and lower voices with equal weight
  • Following piano accompaniment as a harmonic and melodic guide
  • Sustaining focused tone in sustained passages
  • Navigating contemporary sacred harmony
