Description
Energy and groove are the key elements in this burner. Kris takes Dave Brubeck's New Orleans style tunes and adapts it to the big band with style. An improvised solo for 1st alto and 2nd trumpet, along with some tricky lines for the alto and trumpet together, will offer some challenges. Some big, juicy ensemble will keep the band busy, too. A super-hot chart, great for festival! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Don't just read it, hear it, play along with it, and watch your students grow with it. In MakeMusic Cloud, Crescent City Stomp: Jazz Ensemble Conductor Score & Parts comes alive with professional accompaniment, adjustable tempo, and built-in practice tools that turn solo practice into real progress.

About the Arranger: Kris Berg

Kris Berg

Kris Berg directs the Jazz Studies program at Collin County Community College in Texas and holds degrees in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. His work as a clinician and performer has taken him across the country and internationally; he has shared the stage with artists including Kurt Elling, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, and Clark Terry, and his arrangements have been performed and recorded worldwide. Berg founded both the Collin Jazz Fest and the Texas All-Star Jazz Camp, positions that reflect his deep commitment to developing the next generation of jazz musicians.

As a prolific arranger and composer for Belwin Jazz (Alfred Publishing), Berg brings distinctive voicings and accessibility to big band literature. He is also the author of Bass Lines in Minutes, a widely adopted resource for jazz educators. Currently active as an artist and clinician for Yamaha Corporation of America, Berg continues to shape the jazz education landscape through his writing, teaching, and ensemble direction.

Why we love this

Berg captures the essence of New Orleans grooves and transplants them into big band territory with real sophistication. The solo opportunities for 1st alto and 2nd trumpet demand musicianship while the ensemble passages keep everyone engaged. This is the kind of chart that plays as well as it sits on a festival adjudication sheet.

What to expect

Hot, infectious, and rooted in New Orleans tradition, yet reimagined with the sophistication of modern big band writing. The groove pulls you forward while the solo sections invite individual expression; the ensemble moments swell with energy and intention.

Who it's for

Jazz ensemble directors seeking a challenging, stylistically grounded chart for festival or concert programming. Intermediate to advanced ensembles with capable solo voices in the alto and trumpet sections will thrive with this material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock in the rhythm section early. The groove is the foundation; once drums, bass, and piano establish the pocket, the horns will sit naturally.
  • Highlight the alto and trumpet counterlines. These require precision and balance; isolate them in sectional rehearsals so they cut through without overpowering the ensemble.
  • Give soloists space to breathe and personalize their lines. The chart expects interpretive choices; encourage the 1st alto and 2nd trumpet to explore phrasing and dynamics within the changes.
  • Shape the ensemble hits with clarity and punch. Big, juicy passages need clean attacks and unified articulation to land the intended impact.

How to use it

Program this as a closing number or festival highlight where the ensemble's energy and musicianship shine. The stylistic authenticity and solo opportunities make it equally effective as a concert feature or festival entry.

Skills your students will build

  • Improvisation over chord changes (1st alto and 2nd trumpet solos)
  • Jazz articulation and interpretation within written parts
  • Counterpoint between trumpet and alto sections
  • Ensemble cohesion in complex big band voicings
  • New Orleans jazz swing feel and groove orientation
