Description
Energy and groove are the key elements in this burner. Kris takes Dave Brubeck's New Orleans style tunes and adapts it to the big band with style. An improvised solo for 1st alto and 2nd trumpet, along with some tricky lines for the alto and trumpet together, will offer some challenges. Some big, juicy ensemble will keep the band busy, too. A super-hot chart, great for festival! This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

About the Arranger: Kris Berg

Kris Berg

Kris Berg directs the jazz program at Collin County Community College in Texas, where he holds degrees in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. His ensembles have earned multiple invitations to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and he founded both the Collin Jazz Fest and the Texas All-Star Jazz Camp. Berg's arrangements have circulated globally through performances and recordings, establishing him as a prolific composer for Belwin Jazz.

As a clinician for Yamaha Corporation, Berg maintains an active presence on the festival circuit and has collaborated with artists including Kurt Elling, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, and Clark Terry. He authored the widely-adopted method book Bass Lines in Minutes and is endorsed by Walter Woods Amplifiers. His work spans both the bandstand and the rehearsal room, blending practical pedagogical knowledge with the demands of professional jazz.

Why we love this

Berg channels the rhythmic DNA of New Orleans jazz through a big band lens without sacrificing the style's essential swing and looseness. The solo opportunities for alto and trumpet give your stronger players real moments to shine, while the ensemble passages pack enough density and sass to keep the full section engaged. It's the kind of chart that sounds like a genuine small-group session expanded, not a classical tune dressed up in jazz clothes.

What to expect

Crescent City Stomp swings hard with the warmth and personality of New Orleans jazz. It's fun without being lightweight, propulsive without losing its groove, and genuinely clever about how it weaves individual voices into collective sound.

Who it's for

Grade 4 jazz ensembles with capable improvisers and the stamina for dense, active writing. Your trumpet and alto sections need solid chops and confidence; this chart doesn't hide weak players. Festival programs especially benefit from the energy and sophistication Berg brings here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the rhythm section establish the groove pocket early in rehearsal. The stomp rhythms demand lock and precision from bass and drums before the horns pile on.
  • Prepare your alto and trumpet soloists well in advance. The improvised sections need space to breathe, and comfort with the changes prevents tentative playing during the performance.
  • Balance the ensemble tutti passages so the tricky alto-trumpet lines cut through without the full band drowning them out. This requires strategic dynamic control from both sections.
  • Honor the relaxed feel of the New Orleans tradition even as the chart moves quickly. Tension and precision shouldn't kill the groove.

How to use it

This is a festival standout that works well in the second half of your set when the audience and band are both energized. Pair it with a ballad or uptempo standard to show range, or use it as a closing number when you want to leave people on their feet.

Skills your students will build

  • Trading solos and maintaining harmonic accuracy over changes
  • Balancing ensemble density with sectional clarity
  • Reading and executing syncopated rhythmic figures across multiple voices
  • Interpreting swing style and phrasing in a big band context
  • Listening to and responding to individual voices within full ensemble texture
