About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens was born in Gary, Indiana in 1963 and studied composition at VanderCook College of Music, graduating in 1985. He spent three decades as a band director in Texas before retiring in 2014, during which time he became one of the most prolific composers for young ensembles in North America, with over 300 published works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensemble.

Owens has established himself as a leader in accessible, pedagogically sound composition. His works appear on festival and contest lists across the country and have been cited in educational texts as models for young band literature. He holds memberships in ASCAP, the Texas Music Educators Association, and Phi Beta Mu International, and has received commissions from the American Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu International, and university music programs. He currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas.
